I was wondering who everyone thought was the strongest region, and who was the weakest. So lets rank them, 1 being the strongest, 16 being the weakest.

7th by far...not even close. 11th ranked team in the 7th region would be #1 in 4 other regions.

Couldn't agree more. The 7th region is going to be a fun one to follow.

What are some of the criteria used for ranking?

 

I was wondering about how to categorize a region are these rankings based on depth of teams in the region, head-to-head state tournament victories, talent of players in the region, how tough it is for any one school to win the region (whether it be from the field or, in contrast, for one of the select powers in the region), etc.

 

Also, what was the general time period considered, and how was realignment accounted for. If comparing state tournament wins, which seem to be a fair and consistent indicator of how the cream of the crop in each region fared against one another over time, then how were teams such as Scott County or South Laurel counted? Each has a state title in recent memory, yet won it in a different region than they currently compete in (1998 in the 8th and 2005 in the 12th, respectively).

 

One region which I found to be particularly interesting was the 10th, which has traditionally been dominated by Mason County, who usually has only had to compete with one other school who is 'up' in a given year (i.e. Clark Co. and Bishop Brossart) have had some really good teams that come out and make small runs). The 10th has recently been highly successful at the state level, but should their region be considered weaker due to the prevalence of some of the smaller NKY county and private schools?

 

How do we measure them versus a region such as the 2nd or 13th whose region is more balanced, and would likely win an "ACC/Big-10" type challenge if each of the teams in the region were paired off according to their ranking, (i.e. 10th #1 vs. 2nd #1, 10th #2 vs. 2nd #2, etc.) even though the higher games would be more likely to be taken by the 10th? I think that past any of the top 2-3 10th region teams in a given year, the 2nd or 13th would have a considerable advantage in match-ups past this point.

Agree. The strongest region by far. All 4 of GRC's losses are to a 7th region team.

Here's a little exercise I like to do. Take the 8 highest-ranked teams in each region and average their Lit/Cantrall ratings. Nothing scientific; just that there will be 8 teams in each regional tournament (usually; and not necessarily the highest-ranked 8 teams). Here are the results from the newest Litratings (subject to mathematical miscalculation on my part):

That seems to be a really fair, efficient, and easy way to get a good picture of the state for a given year, especially later on in the season when the sampling pool has been expanded with more games played.
