Jerry Tipton Says Kentucky Is Distracted

Featured Replies

Jerry Tipton thinks the Cats are distracted by the possibility of a perfect season.

I'm not one to rip on Jerry Tipton for his negativity, but I'm having a difficult time finding much negativity around the program right now.

Fortunately for us, Jerry Tipton does not share this problem.

He says that Kentucky lacks a dominating big man and does not shoot the 3 ball well, hence the zone.

I guess he has not seen Patrick Patterson (who is shooting 63%) and Demarcus Cousins (who is averaging 15.4 points & 9.6 rebounds in 19.2 minutes of play...and shooting 54%).

Maybe he's overlooked the fact that Kentucky has shot 40% from the 3 point line? Bledsoe is shooting 46% from deep; Patterson is shooting 47.6%; Miller is shooting 43.9%; and John Wall is shooting 39.4%.

I'm not the type of person who buys into the anti-UK bias. But Tipton cracks me up. He and Pat Forde have become so predictable and negative that they've lost nearly all credibility as a journalist.

Here's his article:

He (Tipton) says these things in order to get you to read his stories. Its just a question of when (not if) the Herald Leader shuts down, ridding us of anti UK and Coal views...which are not expressed by the majority of Kentuckians. I say good riddance to the entire Newspaper!

Tipton is an idiot. UK has two dominating big men and has been one of the better three point shooting teams in the country.

I didn't think it was that negative at all. A very realistic look at the Cats, and he even took some quotes directly from Cal on some of his concerns.

He did mention not having the presence of 1 dominating big man, BUT also stated

UK might lack such a dominating big man, but the Cats' imposing front line has overwhelmed many opponents. In NCAA statistics through games last weekend, Kentucky ranked second nationally in rebound margin (plus 11.5), seventh in blocked shots (7.5 per game) and seventh in shooting (50.2 percent).

I have no problem with what he wrote. In fact, I think he echoed Calipari's sentiments that this team HAS to improve every week.

We have arguably the best front court in America and when you got guys who can get to the rack at will then the 3 ball becomes less important.

Jerry Tipton could write an article on the Corbin phone book and people would complain that it was negative against UK

Dominant big man? IMO Cousins and Patterson are as fierce a duo as college basketball has to offer right now. Cousins numbers are insane, Patterson is a proven beast on the block who has expanded his game this season to the 3 point line. UK's big men are as key to UK's potential to future success as anything else in the program IMO.

This one isn't necessarily negative, but it's inaccurate. Kentucky has been winning games largely due to the success of their big men and, of course, John Wall.

To say that Kentucky lacks a dominating big man is completely untrue. Cousins & Patterson have formed the most dominating frontcourt in the nation.

To say that Kentucky is inconsistent from 3 point range is not accurate. They're shooting above 40% for the season, which is much better than any years prior to this season.

No, they don't have a Bill Walton or Lou Alcindor, but did noone read this quote from the article

I am tickled to death with the Cats front line and how good they could be by tourney time. But I don't see a player the caliber of Walton, Alcindor, O'Neal, etc on the roster right now. But I LOVE what they do have.

Out of 347 D1 teams UK is ranked #23 with regard to 3 pt. %. I hope that they can continue to shoot this poorly all season long.

No man I just skimmed over the article. But what sense does it make to say that they don't have a Bill Walton or a Lew Alcindor? Very few teams ever have a player of their caliber.

I also think that college basketball is kind of weak right now in the post, and players like Cousins and Patterson are more dominant than they should be. JMO.

Granted, I've only watched one UK game this year, the UL game. But, when John Wall was out of the game, UL came back. Question, without John Wall, is UK a dominant team? Are Cousins and Patterson enough to carry the team without him?

I, like you, do not find his article that negative. I have some of the same concerns that he does and think that UK is vulnerable, as last Saturday showed.

I'm not that concerned about how they shoot against teams such as Hampton, more so how they shoot and handle the ball against bigger, quicker, good defensive teams such as Louisville. How will they fare versus a team that traps and presses if Wall is not in the game due to foul trouble, cramps or whatever? Bledsoe does OK, but is sometimes out of control, Dodson and Harris are very shaky and Miller is up and down. Cousins rarely plays 20 minutes a game due to foul trouble and Orton is getting into foul trouble quicker than him. Patterson has not been a low post presence this year, although I think that he could still be if the need arises.

Tipton just seems to be doing what a journalist is paid to do in my opinion.

I just hope they can continue to hit the 3 against all the competition and not just teams like Hartford. They sure were off the mark against Louisville from the 3.
