January 4, 201016 yr University of Kentucky football coach Rich Brooks will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. today at the Wildcat Den at Commonwealth Stadium, the university announced early today. http://www.kentucky.com/kentuckysports/football/story/1081741.html
January 4, 201016 yr Personally, I feel it is about to be a sad day in Kentucky. I hear Rich Brooks is tired of fighting the battle for TOTAL support of the UK football program by the athletic director. He is tired of fighting for what he had been told and promised in regard to improvements in the UK football operation including facilities, coaches salaries, etc........those that all SEC programs that UK is competiting with have already made. I am all for UK spending mega dollars for the basketball program. It is arguably the best in the country. But then our fan base would love for our football to be equally strong, but yet we are competiting against SEC teams who are light years ahead of us on the money invested in their football program. It is not right and Coach Brooks knows it is not right, but he sees it is not going to change with Mitch Barnhart in charge. He is tired of all the energy he spends fighting for his football program with his own athletic director. Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Mark Richt, Lane Kiffin, Steve Spurrier, Gene Chizik, Les Miles, Bobby Johnson, Houston Nutt, Dan Mullen, and Bobby Petrino are the guys Coach Brooks wants to lace up his gloves and fight. He feels like a boxer who is only allowed to fight with one arm! Sad day for Kentucky football.
January 4, 201016 yr I, obviously, will be very supportive of Joker Phillips as the new UK football coach. If an old, crafty fighter like Rich Brooks can't get his athletic director to step up to the competition, how is a rookie head coach going to get some of these things accomplished? He will be starting out with the deck stacked against him.

I have been critical of Joker and the decision to name him "coach-in-waiting", but I too will be very supportive of him when he is named the HC at UK.

I didn't realize that Brooks was frustrated with the admin.

In essence, the coaches you listed at their respective schools have basketball coaches fighting the same battle as Rich Brooks.
January 4, 201016 yr I hope he stays. He has exceeded expectations and brought UK football back to relevance from the brink of destruction. If he doesn't, I understand and naturally will support Joker 110%. But I really want Brooks to stay if he really wants to stay. If he is truly ready to retire, he deserves to enjoy it. I didn't realize that we were still lagging behind on this project. I have thought it was a done deal for some time. UK is the only SEC program that doesn't have a facility or specific area near its stadium to host recruits. Need to get this done. No sense in handicapping our football program, which so many players and coaches have worked so hard to build.

January 4, 201016 yr Author If Paul Bryant can't get the needed support from the administration for the football program, then nobody can.

No, I do not think Mitch Barnhart will immediately get any heat for Coach Brooks stepping down. I don't think Rich would throw him under the bus in the public forum. Mitch Barnhart will get the heat when/if Joker fails to keep the program rising in the next couple of seasons. This is a very critical crossroads for UK football to be able to sustain their quest of competing with the SEC big boys.
