When the SEC was very good 2 or 3 years ago and they wanted to tell everyone about it.

 

It was started when Bama was invited to their first Rose Bowl and beat Washington. On the train ride back at all of the stops around the south, Bama players heard people chanting SEC!

That definitely took the argument to a new level because all of the Big 10'rs were mad that Michigan and Ohio State didn't have a rematch for the title.

 

I think this is what really set it ablaze. Going into the next season people were more vocal about the sluggishness of the Big-10 and the primacy of the SEC. I also don't remember there being a lot of conference bickering before Auburn's snubbing in '04.

It has existed forever, but the last 10 years it has exploded due to message board guy/internet and the BCS in general. The BCS has created a culture that requires you to root for your team's conference in out of conference games so that your own resume is enhanced. It seems natural to me. If you are in a conference that cannot win a game against anyone besides other conference foes, it makes you look worse.

 

SEC may have a trademark on the chant, but in fairness, the SEC has won 5 out of 10 BCS title games. If it were any other conference, it would be shoved in everyone's face how great that conference is.

I don't understand the folks that "don't get" saying your conference is better than another.

 

Its basically the same as the strength of schedule argument. (My conference is better, so my schedule is harder, so my record may be worse, but only because we played better teams than you). Do you not get that either?

In all fairness the last few seasons the top 2 teams in the SEC have been 2 of the best in the country. All conferences have good teams it just seems last few years SEC have the best team or teams. 3 National Champs in a row and a chance for 4 is hard to beat.

I don't know, but I don't get it. I root for 2 teams, outside that, I don't care. I will have to say though, it started with the "SEC" fans.

 

I might be different than most, but I don't even get the "root for 2 teams" logic. I'm a one team person and always have been. I've liked certain players over the years, but never any team other than UK.

It seems like every year this is the leading topic in the bowl season. I don't always remember it being this way.

 

That probably started at the very first college football game ever played, even before there were conferences. People wanted to get the jump on others just in case. :lol:

Early 70s I worked in a place with a lot of guys who loved sports. So thats when I started debating the SEC verses Big 10/SouthWest/Pac 8/, didn't argue about the ACC or any other conference.

 

Had one guy who loved the Big 10 and he hated me, back in the 70s we would take each others team in the bowls and I'd do OK. I'd remind him about 1968 Ohio State and I'd bring up Bama 78/79...Georgia, glad he wasn't a Husker/Sooner fan.

Maybe when the real championship game started being played @ Legion Field.......later moved to the Georgia Dome.................:idunno:

I'm not sure but what conferences can possibly be beating their chests this year?

The teams have been off for a month, often teams are dealing with a lot of change, and who knows what the mindset of the players and coaches is at that point?

 

Teams that looked great during the season can look terrible, and teams that weren't that impressive can play the game of their life.

I agree. I have been saying this for years.

I remember a little talk in 2004 when Auburn went undefeated through the SEC and didn't get a shot at the title. I remember folks on TV making a case for Aubrun because of the strength of the SEC.

 

The real push in my mind started to come after the 2006 title game between Ohio St. and Florida. The SEC started to get respect around the coutry after how they dominated the title game.

 

The Bowl Challange Cup that ESPN does has also been a catalyst. They have been doing it since 2002, so they push the conference records during the bowl season. Ironically, the SEC has never won the thing.
