The Mountain West...and I'm not kidding even a little bit...4-0 with one game left in bowl season...TCU was a monster, but Utah, BYU and Air Force have really stood up well all season. IMO, the SEC still has the two best teams in the country.

IMO, the SEC still has the two best teams in the country. I guess the MW but look at who they beat,the MAC has not won a bowl game in like 11 years, the Pac-10 and C-USA. The MW has been better overall than the Pac-10 for a few years(outside of USC).

However the question that then needs to be asked is...if your conference has the two best teams in the nation, does that really translate into having the best conference. To me, there's a lot to be said about how you do out of conference, but if you really have a strong conference, there shouldn't be many, if any, undefeated teams going into the conference tournament.

Each conference has it's "elite" teams, and each conference has its doormats. It's those middle of the road programs that usually determine the outcome. If they play above average, then it's a strong conference. If they play below average, then not so much. But, as someone has already posted, as a true die-hard fan, I can't bring myself to root for my hated conference rival...even if they're playing someone out of conference. An Ohio State fan rooting FOR Michigan? No way! Do you think there were a lot of Oregon State fans rooting for the Ducks in the Rose Bowl? I would certainly hope not.

(My conference is better, so my schedule is harder, so my record may be worse, but only because we played better teams than you). Do you not get that either? That's basically making excuses for your team sucking. Plus what's the official way you can say a league is better than another? Is the SEC better than the Big Ten, they went 1-1 in bowls games against them. Are the better than the Big East, they went 1-1, are they better than the ACC, they went 0-2. What makes one conference better than another? Is all opinion.
January 4, 201016 yr I agree. I have been saying this for years. :thumb: I guess its good for debate, but ultimately, it doesn't provide an accurate representation, IMO. The BCS Championship game is the only bowl game on the list that you can confidently say gives you two teams that are 100% focused on the game and committed to winning. And, even then, you're still dealing with players that haven't played a game in a month. The rest, even the big ones, can't even guarantee that much, IMO.

Really only way to determine anything is to have playoff. Last year 5wide thought USC best I thought Florida best. Let's have playoff 8 or 16 to see who is best. If 2 teams from same conference make championship game then elite teams in that league are the best.

I would clarify...I felt like USC was as good as anybody at the end of the season. I didn't, however, feel like their "BCS" case was as strong as Florida's. Hence, the need for the playoff. Billick made an interesting comment during the Sugar Bowl about how Cincy was playing hard until the end and that the NFL could take a lesson in that regard. It made me think about how the college system makes every regular season game a big one...and the NFL, with its playoff system, can allow for meaningless games at the end. I think I'll take the latter.

Alabama and Florida were challenged, just not beaten. I agree that the best indicator of conference strength is how you do outside of the conference. I do not believe, based on the old eye test, that there is a conference that is better than the SEC.
