I'm guessing some kind of illness?

Wow..... Really sad to hear.I remember him when he came to Ft Thomas in 1999....It was mid November and he had Flip Flops on... Very good coach!!! Our thoughts go out to the Louisa community.

Chuke I do believe was battling cancer.

Flip flops was his trademark. I remember a game against Newport and he was wearing them and it was pouring the rain and it was late October and the mud on the sidelines was unreal, but there was Chuke in his flip flops.

He practically built the Magoffin County program.

Lots of irony as Coach Goldsmith was my head coach and Chuke was offensive coordinator my SR year. Goldsmith is going after his 1st ever state championship this morning while Chuke passed yesterday. I also worked a couple of summers for Chuke at school and coached with him in the late 90's.

He was a tough son of a gun. It took my growing up later in life to really understand him and the impact he had on his players. He was the only human I've ever had a falling out with over miscommunication. After a couple of years we finally patched things up. This year I'm on LC's staff and Coach Salmons had Chuke elected into the LC hall of fame. He rolled out of the hospital to come accept the award with many old LC greats surrounding him. We honestly thought him coming there would probably only leave him with a day or two on Earth. Not Chuke! He battled another 3 months.

My prayers go out to Chuke, his family and their friends. He will forever be a part of the LC tradition. All the guys in the Hall have a jersey in a shadow box. Chuke has one of his old pair of flip flops!

He coached at Bourbon County ... He was Dudley's replacement. He had some decent teams, but I don't believe he made it past the first round of the playoffs. I do remember in typical Chuke fashion that he had one of the state's leading running backs with that good old Belly Read!!!!!!

 

 

Also send prayers to Coach Copley at Greenup and as I know Chuke just basically raised him coming out of high school. He really looked up to Chuke, and I believe helped him coach for a few years. I would imagine that this is a tough time for him as well.

Cancer. He has been very ill for quite some time.

Besides Lawrence Co., Coach Williams had served as head coach at Prestonsburg, Bourbon Co., Johnson Central, and Paintsville.

It became his trademark, but he didn't wear the flip-flops for "show". He had a very good reason. It always grated on me to read posts implying it was eccentricity on his part. Very few are as plain-spoken and straight-forward as was Chuke. He was the type that "you'd better not ask the question if you don't want to hear the answer" - but there was never personal malice, though sometimes his passion (complete with foul language and arm waving) would be misread as such.

 

One would never get lip service from Coach Williams. It's why he struggled in some of his more politically-charged HC positions.

 

 

It's good his death comes the night before the State Finals. He wouldn't want to miss the games. :thumb:
