Better to send them there now with more support than to piddle around and let them drain the manpower further.

I am happy that he is sending the troops over there (for the sake of those already there), I just hope he doesn't fall into the trap that so many politicians have made in getting too involved in the planning. A military operation needs to be left up to the commanders not the bureaucrats.

I didn't get to watch but heard he said we'd be out in 18 months?

Never mind watched the video and I don't think he meant it the way I was told it to be. I'm ok with this news thus farm but need more info.

Interesting timing, huh?

What I heard was that troops would BEGIN coming home in 18 months.

I am an Obama supporter and know that this is probably necessary for whatever plans he has, but I still don't like the idea of sending this many troops over there.
This is roughly half of what McChrystal claimed was needed for a medium-risk and high-risk mission going forward.

Heard somewhere summer of 2011.

I think the main problem Obama has with this decision will be with the left. It will continue to erode the angelic view that they have had with Obama.

While the right will grumble that it is not enough and not giving the military what they need to be successful. But it will only be a grumble.

Personally, I don't have a problem. It's what needs to be done to end this. I like the timetable. I happen to agree with him that unless we set a time table, there will be no clear expectations of the Afghans to take control of their own country. I like that while many decry the time he took to make his decision, I think that there is a plan. Rather than send troops in with no plan, no limits, there seems to be a strategy and a plan. THAT's important to me.

He is probably still worried about 'victory':

BTW, Emperor Hirohito did not sign Japans surrender on the Missouri.

Whatever the belief system of this President as to what victory means, the fact is that the job needs to get done and American soldiers need ultimately get out of harms way in this theater. This has taken a long time and can not continue indefintely. I think we all agree on that.

On a side note to last night's announcement, does anyone else find our President kind of boring? For someone to be as engaging and charismatic, he has become kind of dull in these type addresses.

I am fine with the decision, I guess. I think we all want to be out of there and I will hold out hope our strategy will work.

I agree, I think he tries to be too perfect.
