I guess it depends on what you consider staying in the game.. Highlands led by 24 early and every time Beechwood would pull to 17, FTH would answer immediately. Highlands was never in danger of losing that game.. I also feel that was one of Highlands worse performances of the year and one of Beechwoods best...The games with Dixie and Cov Cath were just as lopsided and neither are near the teams that Highlands is, so, those 2 games are just as indicative as Highlands, but, because they didn't get absolutely ran off the field by them, that's the only game people want to point too. Sure, Beechwood has improved throughout the season, most good teams do, but, alot of that is also the result of playing much lesser competition than in the early season. It's a whole lot easier to look good against Ludlow, BBrossart, WVerona & Dayton than to look that way against the others...

 

Beechwood was very young going into the season. Now they are seasoned they will be just fine. That is why Noel played those teams to get ready for Mayfield and maybe LCA or Hazard.

I too think Mayfield could win by 2 or 3 touchdowns, but only if this game was played at the beginning of the season. Now, I don't buy it. Those younger kids from Beechwood have a lot of games under their belt and have showed they were still the best class A school northern KY has to offer.

 

For Mayfield, let's just say if they don't play in B.G. this year, it will become increasingly difficult with a stronger Beechwood team coming back next year. Mayfield's cabinets won't be empty, but this is the year to knock off the Tigers if it's going to get done. I remember several years ago when the current group of Mayfield seniors were 8th graders, folks were pointing to this class as something special. Looks like the pieces may have finally fallen into place.

 

Mayfield 28-23, Mayfield takes a safety late in the game to optimize field position and hangs on when a late game Beechwood drive falls short.

 

2 state championship in the 70s, 2 in the 80s, 2 in the 90s and a chance for 2 more this decade. :clap:

Mayfield fan...Nothing against Beechwood. Have alot of respect for there program. That doesn't mean I think they'll win this game...I just think Mayfield is considerably better this year...Most polls, opinion and computer, would agree and I have been fortunate to catch a couple of Beechwood games on the the internet, so, I'm not strickly going by what the polls say. This threads poll is leaning Beechwoods way, but, I would imagine there's alot more NKY voters on here or alot of voters giving Beechwood credit because of past success and tradition and that's fine. I don't have a problem with it. I, myself, is seeing it for what I think it is and thats a 3 TD win by Mayfield. If it doesn't pan out that way, I'll take a 1 point win and be happy. I doubt any team wins by 3 td's unless turnovers happen. I hear Beechwood people saying they have speed but I doubt they have our type of speed and as many players that can really run. If Shelton gets a half a step I will be impressed and shocked if anyone on Beechwood can catch him.

Hey your opinion is what I was looking for. I'm not a Beechwood guy but I'm from NKY and Will be rooting for them. I haven't seen Mayfield play how big are they? Bellevue had the size advantage on Beechwood last week but it didn't seem to slow Beechwood down. What type of field does Mayfield have?

 

Mayfield averages about 260 across the offensive line and about 245-250 on the defensive line. Only 1 sr and 4 jrs on the OL, but, most started last year, so, they're a seasoned group. Not fast but have quick feet and pretty strong and they stay with there blocks. Pass block real well and better than average run blockers. Defensively, Earles, a DT has been battling shoulder problems. He's quick off the ball and a difference maker, but, he missed a couple of recent games and that same shoulder injury flared up this past week. Would be a blow if he can't go friday. Hopefully, he'll be okay.

 

The stadium is a concrete foundation, built back in the 40s or 50s. Great view of the game from the top. Holds about 5-6000 people, I'd guess. Haven't sat on the visitors side in years, but, it has aluminum seating and should have plenty of room for up to 5-600 people. More than that and you'll want to stay on the primary side. It offers a great atmosphere for a game. Behind the west endzone is where everyone tailgates. The roudy bunch, i like to call em, but, some good food and beverage, for sure. The old alums always come out of hybernation this time of year and talk there past history and memories. Most of it exagerated, of course, but, thats a story for another day. The field itself is usually in prime condition year round, unless of course alot of rain hits, but, it drains well and shouldn't be an issue..

Sounds like Mayfield has about the same size as Bellevue. Beechwood isn't real big but playing against the big boys doesn't seem to bother them. The field on the other hand may. Beechwood has only played on natural grass a couple of times this year. I think the artificial surfaces they play on has been an advantage this year due to their speed and quickness. When we played them in the mud I really thought we had a chance. They got us at their field in the play offs and turned on the after burners. Looked like a total different team.

To clarify...no way would I insinuate that BW could have ever beaten Highlands nor was the game truly in doubt...but the game was 34-20 late in the 3rd or early in the 4th with BW deep in the red zone and just couldn't put it in the end zone...they gave the ball up on downs and HHS scored on the next series.

Both teams will have chips on their shoulders. I keep hearing speed from the Beechwood faithfull. I know Mayfield has speed so it will be interesting to see how they matchup. Will they cover Shelton one on one, that sorta thing.

Give me a break WKY. Read all my posts. Where was I out of line? Just because its my opinion they'll win by 3 TDs, does that make me a bad poster. If anything, I was the one that got attacked, but, never did I show disrespect for anyone or for there team. It's just how I feel it'll turn out. If this were a Highlands/Pulaski thread and someone said they felt Highlands would win by 21 to 28 pts, noone would say a word.

Crunch-time take everything he says with a grain of salt! He likes to give his opinion. But don't give yours or he will go off on you. He'll come back at me now with something crazy. This will be a heck of a game. Both of these teams are very well coached. And will have the teams ready to play. If Beecwood stays home and comes down a few hours before the game friday. Some will say you should have came down thursday. And if you stay all night the day before the same people will find something wrong with that to. To be in the game at the end of the 3rd qtr with Highlands says great things for BW. And to have someone say that that was about as bad as HHS could play could be because of the team they were playing. Good teams can make good teams look bad sometimes. Even Mayfield has had some big ups and downs the last three or four weeks. Losing one game at the end of the year. Some will come back and say it was because of the rain. But both teams had to play in it. Now I will say Mayfield is I'm sure a better team. But not that night. Maybe they just didn't match up well. Who knows. Turnovers is a big part of the game. And Mayfield has turned it over to much lately. They let CC stay in the game because of it. Mayfield is a great team I hear if they don't turn it over. But so are alot of other teams. So to say because of a few games vs the likes of HHS you get beat. You are a 21 point underdog. Highlands very well could be the best team in the state. Nomatter what class. The same can be said about Mayfield. Getting beat by Christ. Co and letting CC scare them. Mayfield has some really good guys on here. And they will tell you constructive things. And they won't argue with you. Ony discuss, which is good.
