November 6, 200916 yr Author From 11.12.09 Rolling Stone story: Fort Carson (3rd largest Army base) has had 14 returning soldiers charged with murder since 05. That's the largest killing spree at a single installation in history. The subsequent Army investigation found that there is a possible association between increasing levels of combat exposure and risk for negative behavioral outcomes. 9 of the 14 were in a brigade that suffered 8 times the rate of casualties that others from Fort Carson. Due to shortages of psychologists/psychiatrists many suffering from PSTD were given a prescription including many classified as "delusional." In one case a soldier who imagined himself to be "an alien dinosaur-like creature" allegedly raped and killed a teenager after being declared "fit." PSTD cases at Fort Carson went from 26 in 2002 to 750 a few years later. Its logical to assume that seeing many rounds of death and violence have a negative effect on you and it makes you a less effective soldier. Sending them back once again is asking for trouble and hurting our country.
November 6, 200916 yr Author Does it say how many had been deployed more than once? Not that I found. However, the 3 that they detailed had been deployed multiple times.
November 6, 200916 yr My son has a friend who got out after his first enlistment. He was crazy before he left and still is. I agree a lot of this can be blamed on multiple deployments, but some people are just crazy.
November 6, 200916 yr I thought he was going "Back" That was one of many things that were reported incorrectly early on. Along with the shooter was dead and a police officer was killed, both incorrect.
November 6, 200916 yr GW didn't call for it and I don't see any scenario where Obama does. And the current soldiers in Iraq do not want a draft. You do not want a guy watching your back who was forced to come over and didn't volunteer.
November 6, 200916 yr For clarification purposes, why are these questions being posed? The reason I ask is what does that age group do. Are they productive with there time? I have a 20 yr old daughter in college and playing sports. I would say she's productive. I know a lot of kids she graduated from high school that have flunked out of school, ended up pregnent, are into drugs. The military, IMO could have made a huge difference in the life.
November 6, 200916 yr This was to be his first deployment. The guy was sick Muslim extremest, plain and simple. I agree that this had nothing to do with deployments, obviously since he had not been deployed. He was just a sick, idiot who lost his mind.

November 6, 200916 yr As someone who has a son that is in the Army, I for one wouldn't want just anyone to be drafted to go and watch his back or protect our country. It takes a special person to go into the service and master the type of training these young men and women go through. I want a person that wants to be there and not someone who has been forced to go. Instead of a draft lets move to fighting one war instead of 2. Also lets get busy and handle the business and get out. These politics being play by the past 2 Administrations is a bunch of crap. Put me in Charge and this thing would be over in 45 minutes. See the US Gov't plays by rules. There are no rules in Fighting. To many men and women are losing their lives, because the Gov't is worried about following rules. Lets win and get home.
November 6, 200916 yr So are you saying that some kids should not be required ? I don't think the draft would ever get through our government. This could be a way to motivate our young people. I'm just throwing this out there. If one is a drop out. If one is in trouble with the law, but not a murderer or similar. For instance, drugs, theft, child support, any misdemeanors. How about if you have drawn unemployment for more than six months? What if you flunked out of school and have been unemployed for a year. Don't you all think that this would motivate our young folks to be productive. Give them a sense of purpose ? Just brainstorming...
November 6, 200916 yr As a college student, I dare them to try to draft me. I'm not against being at war, but absolutely no one will tell me that I have to go.

I understand what you are saying. Your points are valid, but I think the world needs the USA. Are you saying that 18 to 22 year olds are already set in there ways? I would argue that at the age whether they are special or not remains to be seen.

You are trying to make something of your life. Don't stop that. Do you know of any one your age that isn't doing the right thing? How bout someone that is a father but can't pay child support? How about drugs and alcohol ? Structure and discipline could go along ways in making them a productive member of society.
