November 8, 200916 yr If it weren't for "God" we would have no wars. What happens if there isn't a God? Who sorts it out then?Wrong. Wars are about more than religion. Land has always been a reason we've had war in this world.
November 8, 200916 yr Is the draft not an example of government interference in the lives of people that don't choose to be soldiers? I think the draft is an example of a country/military that is in need of help defending it's citizens. If they indeed become short handed and can't draft soldiers, your right to "choose" in many more ways will be in doubt my friend.
November 8, 200916 yr The wars of history have more to do with scarce resources than they do with religion. The majority of them are veiled in religion as a popular reason simply because it is hard to convince some people the value of killing others for resources. If you make it look like the infidels have something wrongly that God meant for your people then it makes it a tad easier to start jihad, or crusades. Depending on your perspective. Ok, but it still has some religious ties right? If there is no "God"/"Allah" whatever people believe in doesn't that make some wars useless?
November 8, 200916 yr Wrong. Wars are about more than religion. Land has always been a reason we've had war in this world. Some wars sure. Are we fighting two wars right now b/c we want land?
November 8, 200916 yr We are. I'm not saying we shouldn't be fighting the war. Didn't they attack us b/c their religion told them to? Yes, I agree that it is a war of religion for them...Not on our part though.
November 8, 200916 yr Yes, I agree that it is a war of religion for them...Not on our part though. Agreed, but we wouldn't be in it if it wasn't for them starting it b/c of religion.
November 8, 200916 yr Agreed, but we wouldn't be in it if it wasn't for them starting it b/c of religion. I can't argue with that SSC.:thumb: But...........Both countries are not in a war of religion. They started it in the name of religion, we need to end it in the name of defense. I guess I see The Untied States as fighting against an act and not a religion.
November 8, 200916 yr Some wars sure. Are we fighting two wars right now b/c we want land? No, but you said "If it weren't for "God" we would have no wars". An inaccurate statement, see The American Revolution, The War of 1812, Mexican-American War, The Civil War, The Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, The Korean War, Vietnam. And those are just wars involving the United States. None of them were about religion. I must also add that, as far as the United States is concerned, the two wars we're involved now in isn't about religion on our behalf.
November 8, 200916 yr Author Let's not be disgraceful and call our troops "others". We have the greatest and best trained soldiers in the world. If we truly were in a situation where a draft was needed I think you are wrong to think that most American's would protest. Some would, but I think the majority, if necessary, would serve and defend our fine nation. Don't read too much into things, my man. "Others" means exactly that - not mine.
November 8, 200916 yr Author You do not deny the charge. You just say your feelings are not hurt. The reason for bringing back the draft is to help defend our country, not to have us to 'tuck our tails and run.' Thus, this is a cheap political trick. I'm going to ask you to take a step back and actually think about what I posted vs throwing out the above. Yes, the reason for bringing back the draft would be to defend out country. That's a given. The seemingly obvious point is that SHOULD we even CONSIDER it the waning support we have today would drop like a lead balloon.
November 8, 200916 yr No, but you said "If it weren't for "God" we would have no wars". You're correct my bad. I shouldn't have said no wars. I should have said a lot of wars. I'm not only talking American wars either. I'm talking all wars in general. Too many of them are for religion. Religion is based on faith. Not fact. It's kind of scary to think there may not be a God and there are a lot of wars based on faith.
November 8, 200916 yr I don't think any modern war is about religion. We are led to believe that they are, as it is a rallying cry for people. The Taliban is brainwashed into thinking that this is a war for the Nation of Islam but who knows what they really want. Religion is so strong for people, it allows them to miss the greater details. I think land, greed, power etc. are more of the root causes for modern wars.
November 8, 200916 yr Your beliefs are nothing but a cheap political trick to pull out of the war on terror. What would happen if we started the draft and people then actually started to support the war in larger numbers? And this has been tried before with cheap shot Dems in Congress in the early days of the Iraq War. As for those who say they will refuse to go if drafted, as my son is in the military, I'll be happy to help you pay for a ticket to the country of your choice. As citizens we have rights and privileges, but we have duties and responsibilties to ensure we keep those rights and privileges. For the record I do not support a draft at this time. What exactly is this war about? I don't think it is just about protecting freedom and democracy. If our involvement has anything other reason, I can't support it as of now. If we are involved for other reasons, who stands to gain? If it's not working class Americans, I do not support it. What were we hoping to accomplish? Should we have to fight for our country, if the reason for being at war isn't what we are led to believe? I really don't know. Southern's fought for states rights, the SS fought for whatever garbage Hitler was spewing, it didn't make it right. Blind loyalty can be a bad thing. I love American, and am glad that I was born and live here. But, I don't think it is the governments job to tell me I have to go to war, especially when we don't really know the cause of it or what we are fighting for.
November 8, 200916 yr ^^I don't want anyone to think my post was anti-troops either. I have family members in Iraq now, and support the troops in any way possible. It takes a special kind of person to join the armed forces, and I am greatful that they are willing to do it.

Trying to pass a bill to bring the draft back at this time would fail, but why bring it up at all? I'm just glad your feelings aren't hurt.
