To me, this whole story speaks more about Meyer than it does Spikes. Meyer is a great coach, but he has had a lot of discipline problems. Haven't they led the NCAA in arrest or run-ins with the police during his tenure? This is a one time incident for Spikes, or at least as far as we know. We haven't heard any bad things about Spikes before, so I think this goes to the coach. I think you're players have to know that they cannot do things like this. But, it's the world we live in. Meyer and every other coach in CFB (especially the SEC) has only one job, WIN! That's all that matters. Things like this are only a big deal for a coach when they are losing. It's a sad world we live in. I attribute it more to the dislike that Meyer and Richt share than Spikes being a criminal. This game has been win at all cost for the last three years. It has been drilled into both sides heads that they should hate each other. I'm in no way condoning what Spikes did, I just think Meyer should recieve more blame for the incident as well as the short punishment.

 

UF is a bit of a shameless program. Last year was a culture of running up the score and poor sportsmanship. It wasn't even like a "Swagger" type of cocky, IMO. It was more about embarrassing people. Should a poor sportsmanship incident be that shocking? Tebow is a hero in the Christian community, and even he tries to show up the other teams. To me, alot of it is the culture.

I agree with most of what you said. I think Meyer loses a lot of respect for this. And, I am with you on that I haven't heard of Spikes doing anything else, but I feel at the very least a FULL 1 GAME supsension was in order.

Oh, I agree. I think a 1 game suspension was the minimum he should have got. He's the defensive captain and cannot be doing things like this.

Absolutely should be suspened and for much more than that laughable 1/2 of a football game imposed by Urban Meyer. I have respected Meyers as a coach, Meyer the man has shown with this move what he is made of elsewhere...spineless,nothing! I am equally as dissapointed in the SEC for going along with it and not adding more. That classless cheap shot of an assault (yes, I said assault) was at best chicken. Spikes didn't just "lose his head" in the heat of the moment , the eye gouging in the middle of a pile was imo one that was thought out, absolutely intentional and intended to hurt somone believing that he wouldn't get caught with it being in a pile. I said assault bc it was meant to not just injure with a football play, punching an eye out like he was doing could affect or jeprodize the lifestyle/eye sight of the running back long after football was over for the both of them. Brandon Spikes is one heck of a linebacker and with this move is also an all time classless cheapshot thug that shouldn't be on a football field.

Spikes imo should be suspended for the rest of the season including the SEC title game, at least untill the bowl game if not all season, including any bowl games.

I know I went on and on here so I do apologize for that, I just hate to see a great game like college football cheapened by this kind of crap.

Oh, IMO, just the things like doing the Gator chomp after big runs, like the one late in the Oklahoma game. Being too mad to talk to reporters after a WIN against MSU, it's little things IMO. I get a sense of arrogance from Tebow, which is why I don't like him as much. Some see it, some don't. I think it's in the eye of the beholder.

You're not reading all my post. I've watched football for 44 years reffed it for about 20 and again it's the first time I've seen anyone do what Spikes did. Have you seen it before? Now I did see a kid try to kick another in the face, but not dig in his face mask with both hands.

 

You must have not reffed any of the games I played in. This exact thing happened to me AT LEAST a dozen times. STARTING WHEN I WAS 12 IN JFL!! Along with spit in my face, stepped on, kicked, ankles twisted, hit between the legs, hands to face in attempts to scratch, and more. It still goes on i've seen it several times in high school games this year as well.

 

Am I saying he should not be suspended? No I am not, because he should be he got caught. But everyone who is so shocked and thinks this stuff doesn't happen is wrong.
