I agree with almost everything you said, he is a tremendous defensive catcher with a scary arm, picked several runners off the bases as well as throwing a good percentage out.

He actually hit the ball pretty well this summer, a lot of big clutch hits and I look for him to have a big year in high school play. Don't know if he will have enough help for HHS to contend though, hopefully I'm wrong.

He is an incredible kid who will be playing for the Bluegrass Chiefs and Coach Rob Sanders next summer. I know Xavier's coach was very impressed with him after seeing him as well as several other schools as well. Coach Sanders will help him tremendously in finding a good fit. The Chiefs other catcher next summer is young Mr. Cottingham, two great arms there.

 

Maybe I wasn't at the games he hit well at but Coach Sanders knew I was there, as did quite a few of the CovCath kids and their Dads at Cooper HS baseball field, which BTW will be one of the nicest HS fields around in a couple of years or so!

And we enjoyed you being there and it was very nice to get to know TOG. By no means am I saying there is not room for improvement. Sam is one of the hardest working, most competitive kids, not to mention very coachable and I have no doubt that he will do nothing but improve. The best news is that he knows what he needs to work on and will.

It doesn't seem like something I would have to spell out to you. "I know D1 talent when I see it" is a pretty presumptive comment that carries a lot of arrogance with it. Most of us here have seen a lot of baseball, and have fun making conjecture about the young men's talents that we have witnessed first hand. Sometimes we're right, and sometimes we're wrong. You, however, seem to have figured out exactly what D1 schools want. Maybe you should be a recruiting coordinator.

Is it just his hitting that will prevent him from playing D1? When looking at catchers do D1 schools place more emphasis on their defense, offense, or are both considered equally important? I've heard some D1 schools really look at POP times for catchers, more so than batting average or slugging percentages, is this true? If POP is important, what is this young man's POP? I wish I could accept your assessment that you "know D1 talent when you see it", but you see I don't know who you are. You could be the greatest catching scout known to mankind that's never missed on a player...or you could just be an average joe that's never played or coached the game beyond Knothole. In fairness to the young man you "know" is not D1 and have been so bold as to say so publicly it might be decent of you to give some reasoning beyond "I know D1 when I see it".

All I'm saying is he is not a D1 talent. He has a good shot at a D2 or any NAIA or D3, but from what I've seen, he is not anywhere close to D1 talent. A lot of D1 scouts/coaches might say they're "interested" in a player, but it's not as if an offer is immediately on the table. Again, take it how you want it, but when there is someone that looks as if they can make it in Division 1 baseball, yes, I do think I can see it, and I don't see it in Sam. You can interpret my comment as "arrogant" or make it sound like I'm a know it all, but I've been around D1 baseball enough to know a thing or two. Obviously not everything. Again, back to Sam. Keep in mind, great 9th region catcher. The 3 main issues I see Division 1 talent wise is his arm is a little weak for D1, and he doesn't have enough power at the plate, and his speed on his feet. I also noticed he likes to go the other way (right center) with the ball at the plate which could take away from his potential to show his strength offensively.

I think Cooper's field is already there!! Howie and coach Bieger have not stopped working on the field and it looks awesome. Now if they could only get a concession stand with restrooms and a batting cage. But, for a second year school, the place is very nice. :thumb:

I think Cooper's field is already there!! Howie and coach Bieger have not stopped working on the field and it looks awesome. Now if they could only get a concession stand with restrooms and a batting cage. But, for a second year school, the place is very nice. :thumb:

I haven't been out to Ryle's field since the end of last season, but from what I heard there has been a bunch of upgrades. I was told it looks fantastic...:thumb:

Young Mr. Cottingham has an unbelievable arm behind the plate. I was at a game last year when the Bluegrass 17's played the 18's and he threw out Lokesak twice. From what I understand Mr. Lokesak hadn't been thrown out all year including high school and summer ball..I hope Dillon can get his act together at the plate. He definately has the defensive skills to play in college..
