BTW just got a E-mail from the Murray State Assistant Baseball Coach and he informed me that AJ Smith (Beechwood 09) is out for the year - we're just rehabbing him for next year after his Tommy John surgery. Still have big plans for him when he gets back to 100%.

BTW spoke to Luck Maile at last night HHS vs. CovCath game. Luke looks much bigger (stronger). Told me his gpa is 3.7 and he is having a ball playing, working out and is loving life at UK and can't wait for the season to start. Look for Luke to be the #2 catcher and playing a lot of games this season.

Love Warning as a pitcher but Shumate will be either the number 1 or two behind Gerwe, then Warning.

 

BTW Chris Gerwe doesn't have to worry about getting an athletic scholarship. The young man was a Governor Scholar, so he goes where he wants to go, on a Academic Scholarship. Congratulation Chirs!

 

A lot of folks forget that Mattie Klein was 5-0 his sophomore year from the mound but IMO he will be the CovCath starting catcher this season, and if you catch you don't pitch for Krumps!

 

CovCath will not have as Coop said a dominate pitcher like Isler, heck a HS pitcher like Isler only comes around only so often, but this team will be deeper on the bump and as thus will be able to throw many more arms at the opposition this season.

Shumate is all gas and IMO is either on or off. Sure somedays he will have stuff that no one can hit. Other days he is way off. If I'm Krumps and I am playing Holy Cross or Beechwood in Districts then I'm starting Warning.

From the beginning of the varsity baseball season and the end of the varsity season, the young Shumate was indeed two different pitchers. He was smart enough to learn from his experiences and learned a lot from his peers like Isler and Maile.

 

From what I saw of him this summer pitching for the Kentucky Colonels U16 team, yes he or Gerwe will be the CovCath #1 and or #2.

 

BTW if you don't believe me, you could ask former Cincinnati Red Pitcher Joe Price who has been working with the young man and what he thinks of him, as of course what I have told you is just MO!

Please if possible, say a prayer for Covington Catholic Baseball Coach Krumpelbeck! Coach Krumps Mother (Mrs. Martha Krumpelbeck) died on Sunday of this week! The Mass of Christian Burial will take place this Saturday the 9th of January!

All three pitchers mentioned are of similar talent and whether we put a 1,2,or 3 beside their name, my guess is they will all see equal time on the mound and be productive. The innings that Isler saw last year will have to be spread throughout the staff.

Klein, Warning, Shumate, and Gerwe are all very solid pitchers. You can make an argument for any of them as the #1, but actually they are all very good 2's (If you're using Isler as the benchmark). When it's their turn to pitch, they'll get the ball regardless of who the opponent is. That may change as the season progresses if someone has a break-out year, I believe two of them will. Last year Isler,Nutini and Krumme ate up over 220 innings alone. A 4 man rotation will work well with this year's staff. Arnzen and Hellman will battle for the spot starts; Hamm and Maile will pitch in relief; and Schlegbaum is a very reliable closer.

 

This team is a very cohesive unit with great chemistry and leadership. They're poised to surprise some people.

That's the big question. I'd look for small ball to be increased over what you've seen the last couple of years.

Drove past Ryle's baseball field last week, it looked really good. Looks like they laid some sod down and brought in extra dirt and gravel. Well manicured and looks like someone is taking care of it better in the off season.
