I don't know why not. I've seen most of you guys compare Obama to everything else so I figured I'd give it a try. My only point was that sometimes people gain things that perhaps they didn't deserve. For example, Oklahoma in last year's BCS game.

This is the same gentleman who covered up Pat Tillman's friendly fire death. Lets hope his military strategic judgement is better than his human judgement.

Off the top of my head, I know that when Alexander Solzhenitsyn won the Nobel for Literature, the government of the Soviet Union refused for him (he wasn't really given the choice) and Hitler made it illegal for Germans to accept the prize.

 

There is at least one voluntary refusal: Jean-Paul Sartre declined the Literature award. I think there are more.

 

 

There's apparently only been one other:

 

Le Duc Tho, awarded the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. They were awarded the Prize for negotiating the Vietnam peace accord. Le Doc Tho said that he was not in a position to accept the Prize, citing the situation in Vietnam as his reason.

Why has no one mentioned that Obama himself was not only surprised, but felt he was undeserving?

Seriously, on this matter, I agree 100% with Obama.

I don't disagree with anything you said. He did not deserve the award at this time and you shouldn't base it on what someone MIGHT do in the future, because who knows what that might be? However, Obama agrees that he didn't deserve the award. All in all, he probably did the right thing in not refusing it. Some would have attacked him for doing so (refusing peace, diminishing the award, something else, as it's always something). To give the money to charity is exactly what should happen, too.
