shooter Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 I woke up this morning and was surprised to hear that Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. My observations: 1. You should be required to accomplish something tangible to get the award. 2. I knew that the prize reflected European political views, this just reinforces my already firm belief. 3. Giving the award to Obama is also a slap at George Bush. 4. While receiving this award is a poltical boost now, in the long term it could be a negative if Obama fails to live up to expectations that have been raised by receiving this award.
Lucky Dog Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 Well, it looks like the Jersery kids have a new verse for their praise songs!
bugatti Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 I think Matt Lauer and David Gregory on the Today show summed it up best: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/33238168#33238192

Wow ... I guess the world is coming to an end.
Wireman Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 They'll give that award to anybody these days, won't they?
FC Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 He was inaugurated on January 20th and nominations were due by February 1st. So I’m assuming he won based on popularity, potential, or something else because I can’t seem to recall any accomplishments of this magnitude during his first ten days in office.

Let's be honest, that is really all it was. The "something else" was a referendum of Bush. Have they come out and said who nominated him?
FC Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 For some reason the Nobel Foundation website won’t come up, I guess there’s a few other people trying to research the requirements for the prize too. Anyway from Wikipedia: “The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five Nobel Prizes bequeathed by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel. According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."
woodsrider Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 Here is a link to the nomination process. Good news, 50 years from now we will be able to find out who the moron is that nominated him. http://nobelprize.org/nomination/peace/process.html Here's another interesting tid bit...Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin were all nominated at one time.
Clyde Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 3. Giving the award to Obama is also a slap at George Bush. . Probably reason 1 and 1A.
16th62nd Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 Probably reason 1 and 1A. Those are good enough reasons for me!!!
