Where were the Trinity fans? There was more red (empty seats) than green.

St.X just has better players this year. They played sloppily and still won. Take away a couple of turnovers and this margin is even uglier. Trinity offensive and defensive lines are not as strong as years past. Trinity couldn't run the ball or stop the run last night because of that. This is the year X finishes in the playoffs I believe.

 

I would agree X has better players but that hasn't caused Trinity to come out on top before. The difference this year seems to be a couple of things that I noticed

 

1) Trinity doesn't seem to punch it in once they get it down the field. They amassed alot of yards and should of led at halftime. Kragthorpe was 18-22 at the half. Whether it is a holding call, or a fumble, it seems to be a pattern going back to the Moeller Scrimmage.

 

2) Defensively the Rocks are young and seem to not grasp the schemes as well as Jordan Whiting, and Brock Messina and company has done the last couple of years. They will get better but will it be in time with the number of sophomores.

3) Gotta give the X coaching staff some props. After Trinity completed changed the defense for the playoff game last year, the coaching staff made changes and almost came back in the second half of the semifinals. Those changes were evident last night as Trinity brought out the same defense again. Coach Glaser said at half time, Cover 3, we're going to run, cover 2, we're going to pass on his half time speech. 4 wide, slanting to the left, X audibles to a run away from the slant again and again. Buehner did a good job getting them to jump offsides by changing cadence. New coaches bring new techniques.

 

4) Trinity has scored 28 points the last 2 playoff games against X in regulation. I don't know if they can score that many this year. 14 points a game going into last night. I don't know if they just gave up trying to run the ball but throwing 40 times a game is leaves Kragthorpe vulnerable, thus the 5 sacks.

 

On a side note, I didn't get a good look on the Buehner pump fake/fumble/incomplete pass in the 2nd quarter. I'd like to know other opinions if you saw the play.

St. X's lines did control the line of scrimmage. Canescat mentioned that Bishop for Trinity gained over 100 yards rushing, which is correct. But in looking at the numbers Bishop had 11 carries in the first half for 20 yards, an average of 1.8 yard per carry. He had 3 carries in the third quarter for 22 more yards giving him 14 carries for 42 yards through 3 quarters.

 

He stayed in the game until the end rushing 5 times for 60 yards in the 4th quarter, including a 41 yard run late againt St. X's second team defense.

 

Trinity controlled the clock in the 1st half with the passing game. The coaches know they must be able to run the ball effectively to take the defensive front pressure on Kragthorpe.

With the total attendence at 26K, I would say alot were missing on both sides ( down 12K)

3 missed field goals may turn into touchdown drives as this season progresses. Trinity has found away to get better for the playoffs the last couple of years so I will not count them out.

However, I was at the game and did not see the demolition that the CJ and a few people on this thread are talking about. The total yard and 1st down stats are about the same. It was a 1 score game till the 4th qtr. The ball did not bounce Trinity's way on many occasions, but that is life. I saw much improvement by the Rock's in many areas. There is still alot of work to do, but I think the young men are coming around nicely given their inexperience. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out. :thumb:

I actually do see some of our usual tactics.......it should be fun from here on out.

Remember as I ramble...I'm a St. X fan. But...people forget how special Tim Phillips was. I can't wait to see his career turn into a pro career. He was superman and a difference maker in the 'up and coming' Rocks' argument about trophys versus life lessons. I will never argue that the process of a football season has no life lessons, but I will say that I hope Tom Jurich looks at Beattt and Co. for our U of L program. Great x and o coaches. Masterful job of preparing 16-19 for the playoffs but ordinary, non football opinions are not aware of the element of luck and momentum in game outcomes. Think about this...2005...game deciding roughing the passer against petrino called against St. X and it nullifies INT for St. X on game deciding td drive. 2006, Rocks are really really good. Beat Male. Well played. 2007, field goal away from a trophy. 2008, one score game. Great win by Rocks. Deuce Finch held out of game by concussion at the halfway point of third quarter. Oh, don't forget the Brian Brohm era. Count another 3 point trophy in 2003. This isn't about choking. It's football. Trinity Shamrocks, as it used to be traditionally called before the Beatty era, have more football brass but they are about one flag, three feet and one tim Phillips away from a different reality. I would easily trade my St. X twin trophies and rings just to hear Mike Glaser address his losing teams in 2003, 2005-2008. Trinity coaches play to win. No denying that or the potential lessons therewithin. Saint X will never go outside the family to find a coach who can out x and o the opponent. Good or bad, it's loyalty to the 'system' that separates the two schools and will continue to perplex parents that are smothered between deciding what's important in high school education and what will produce instant gratification. Win or lose in December, I will take the mentor versus offensive guru approach. But U of L could sure use some offensive behavior!! Beatty, Beatty, Beatty!!!

I disagree about the line play. I think X's Dline dominated. It was the secondary that needs work.
