This is a HS forum, so I'll restrict my answer to High School:

 

It is VERY APPROPRIATE to use the word "we". The players, parents, siblings, trainers, coaches, fans, band, cheerleaders, administrators - all have a hand in THE GAME.

 

I know one local high school - South Oldham - has even come up with a slogan to characterize this very thing: "One-11" It means that every"one" is involved with the "11" on the field in some way, shape, or form...

 

Teams are the on-field representation of a COMMUNITY, and therefore, "WE" is very much correct.

Yes, I think it is appropriate, and if you played for the school that you are rooting for, it is even more appropriate. Are you a part of the team? No. But, you are part of the program.

 

A program has the players and coaches. But, a quality program also has a support staff: photographers, videographers, chain gang, clock operators, announcers, volunteers that paint the field, volunteers that serve food to the players, volunteers that clean up, raise money, bus drivers, and of course the fans.

 

There is not "I" in team, but there are two in organization, and any good football program is an organization. Can you refer to the team as "we"? Heck yes, you are part of the program and you are part of the school.

 

Now, I know some will say no, it is not "we", and sure we don't score TD's, or make tackles, but "we" are there to support the team and "we" cry when the players cry, and "we" celebrate when the players celebrate, and "we" believe that what ever the team wants the team can achieve. "We" help support the players, and "we" take up for the player, "we"protect the players, "we" tell the players they need to work harder, "we" tell the players the truth when they ask, "we" tell the players the coaches are right when they ask, "we"pick the players up when they are down, and "we" bring them back to the ground when think they are better then they are.

 

"We"?, you better believe when Raceland takes the field, I am with them, they know it, I know, and "we" win together, "we" loose together. But, no matter what, "we" are there together. If you think a team ends with just the players, you probably don't know what it's like to be part of one.

 

Again, Old Rambler, you hit the nail on the head. Just exchange the Word Raceland to GREENUP or PORTSMOUTH(I've just been "volunteered" to be the Pep Club Sponsor at the high school) for me. Very appropriate, what is a team without a community of people to back it up, cheer for it, follow through every peak and every valley. If there were no fans, no one who cared if you won or lost what would be the point of playing the game?

If I said "WE" as in sports, who do you think I'm referring to?

"WE" by the college fans is fine too, in my opinion. If it were not for we in the college programs then they would have some empty stadiums when "WE" did not show up. (and pay for over priced tickets)

I hated but to each his own.

Ram summed up my thougths on this perfectly. I use "we" when referring to Greenup but don't use it for college level or Pro teams for which I am a Fan.

I agree with Ram too.

 

I have always followed Lincoln Co. Football. I Love football period ! Little league , High School, College! Loved my time that I got to play. We is very appropriate if your with the team good or bad. You will here alot of people say we when the winning and program is good , but when the times are hard and the loses are piling up they seem to use they. The true fan that supports their team sure has every right to say ( We ) . alot of people need to remember these are young men playing a game that they love. Winning or Losing should not have an impact. I just wanted to add that to what has been said!

As is usually the case I could have just PM'd RAM and got my answer. Well said RAM. After reading that my wife even agreed with you. Trust me it's rare that she lets me win an argument, so I really owe you for that one!

I don't mind when people use "we" for collegiate/pro franchises, but it sure sounds funny. On the HS level, I have no problem, if you were a part of that school's history, then you've earned "we".
