Is the term "we" appropriate?

Featured Replies

When you are referring to the program or team that you are a fan of is the term "we" appropriate in your opinion? I was listening to a comedian make fun of fans that refer to their chosen team with the phrase "we", as in, "we won the state title last year". As if they actually suited up and played the game.

I know I do this on this site but I've never really paid attention to who does or doesn't do this. Do you think it's appropriate or disrespectful to the players and coaches that are actually playing. My wife thinks it's appropriate only if you actually played for that team in the past? What do you think?

100% appropriate! I do it all the time and will continue.

RockPride will give you the official rules soon.

:lol::lol:I remember that debate from a while back...

Yes, I think it is appropriate, and if you played for the school that you are rooting for, it is even more appropriate. Are you a part of the team? No. But, you are part of the program.

A program has the players and coaches. But, a quality program also has a support staff: photographers, videographers, chain gang, clock operators, announcers, volunteers that paint the field, volunteers that serve food to the players, volunteers that clean up, raise money, bus drivers, and of course the fans.

There is not "I" in team, but there are two in organization, and any good football program is an organization. Can you refer to the team as "we"? Heck yes, you are part of the program and you are part of the school.

Now, I know some will say no, it is not "we", and sure we don't score TD's, or make tackles, but "we" are there to support the team and "we" cry when the players cry, and "we" celebrate when the players celebrate, and "we" believe that what ever the team wants the team can achieve. "We" help support the players, and "we" take up for the player, "we"protect the players, "we" tell the players they need to work harder, "we" tell the players the truth when they ask, "we" tell the players the coaches are right when they ask, "we"pick the players up when they are down, and "we" bring them back to the ground when think they are better then they are.

"We"?, you better believe when Raceland takes the field, I am with them, they know it, I know, and "we" win together, "we" loose together. But, no matter what, "we" are there together. If you think a team ends with just the players, you probably don't know what it's like to be part of one.

Well spoken, sir.

I say that if you were a part of the program...i.e. player, equipment manager, parent, then you can use "we" and it is much more appropriate in high school. People who use it for college and pro teams drive me insane, unless you played for, or were part of, those programs.

Well spoken, Ram.

The fans are a part of the program, at any level, and it would be appropriate for those fans to use the term "we", imo. But we need to share in the ups and the downs equally.

As long as "we" win and "we" lose, I think it's fine.

When "we" win but "they" lose, then thats a problem and that fan probably doesn't qualify to use the term "we".

At the high school level I agree, most of us played for that school, have kids playing for that school, so on and so forth. At the levels above that, ONLY if you truely ever were part of the program should you say "We" or "Us". When you get to the college level, I think it gets used to make someone feel more important or more a part of a program than the are. I ask myself, when I die, will anybody at the University of Louisville or UK, or the Colts care? If not, then I don't need to say "we" or "us".

I agree with Ram.

I think fans are as much a part of the program as anything. Fans can fuel a team's fire, so to speak. How many teams can get "up" and stay "up" when no one is rooting for them?

I say this w/ all due respect, once you get into college football, outside of having your family in the stands, the players don't really care about which indivdual fan is there. They just want a loud collection of people. That's why "we" shouldn't be used. The Pros are even worse. A High School is a community's school. Everyone is close. You've seen most of the players on your team play since elementary school. There is a very close bond. "We" is ok.

WE won the state and THEY got beat last week.:idunno:

Ram said it best. Some his posts on here should be required high school football reading. :-)

I think "we" is appropriate in high school, college, and pros. It is interesting to note, though, that fans of tennis players or golfers never refer to them as "we". You never hear anyone say "we won the Masters" when Tiger Woods wins (except maybe his caddy). It must only be appropriate for teams with a certain number or more.

Kind of like teams win games and coaches lose games.

I'll be honest...I didn't read the first post carefully enough. I was speaking strictly on the high school level.:thumb:
