Mayfield 50 Calloway County 33

Featured Replies

A nice win for the Cards playing without star running back Tyresse Murrell on the offensive side with a thigh bruise and flu this week...and lost backup running back Decole Noonan with a severly sprained ankle late in the first half after one of the most impressive runs by a high schooler as he bounced and spun for a long TD run to give the Cards the lead. Mayfield went with 3rd string RB Jonathan Jackson (who could be a starter on most other teams) in the 2nd half of play. Jackson had 2 TD's on the night and the Cards had 2 passing scores...one to Xavier Shelton who now leads the state with 7TD's through the air and the other to Murrell who had to step in and play a slot receiver for the Cards after Noonan's injury.

Calloway played hard and Willis is a beast on the field...if he can only stay on the field for Calloway they will be a tough team come playoff time.

A good win...now hoping that the guys can heal up from the flu and bronchitis that struck the team and get ready for Graves County on Friday before getting into district play.

Why does Willis have a hard time staying on the field is he not in shape or something?

Not anything physical...lots of other problems/issues...man, what a great athlete! He is a total stud at the high school level!

This is Willis' 2nd game of the year, anyone that big is going to need some time to get into shape. He's not there yet and could have provided an even bigger punch to the Laker lineup if he hadn't constantly been winded. He did show great footwork though while avoiding tackler after tackler on numerous plays.

Another poor job by this week's set of officials, one good week ... one bad week I guess. I suppose we were due for another slew of blown calls, pass interference... late hits (several, on both sides) fumble given to the wrong team, forgetting to change sides of the field when the quarter ends (that's just inexcusable).

Anyway, an impressive effort by the Lakers. They brought a big crowd and expected to pull the upset but were done in by some bad play calling in the last quarter and a Mayfield team that had more energy and athleticism in the end.

Should be a good battle between the Oakers and the Lakers for the 4A district crown.

Well said Who's Next. Lone Oak cannot take Calloway lightly. Neither can they take Graves, Green or Caldwell lightly. However, if the Flash stay focused, they could run the table!:thumb:

Is there any concern from the Mayfield faithful regarding the defense? I realize Willis has returned, but the Lakers are not exactly an offensive juggernaut.

I am not seeing Calloway having much of a shot against Lone Oak. Maybe I am wrong.

Defense is a concern, at least me. Mayfield scored almost at will on Calloway but with Willis it opens things up for them. Calloways Qb aint bad. LO will handle Calloway with no problem especially if they get a big 2 or 3 td lead then I think the CC boys kinda let up.

Mayfield had one score done on their 2nd team with 30 secs to go in the game but Mayfield will have to shore up its defense at some point and I think they can. The Cards can score a lot of points and very quickly but they have given 40 and 33 pt games. Being a small school and playing most players both ways its tough on some.

I too am concerned about the defense, Mayfield is giving way too much cushion on passing teams. I think any team would have problems with Willis, our passing defense concerned me the most. The defense looked great in the second half, I don't know what happened in the first half but the team seemed to step it up in the second.

Great job Mayfield ..Looks like a nice run to the playoffs on the horizon
