I can agree with you enough to say that, yes, I am definitely against the 6 class system, but yes, I definitely think that it allows for more community enthusiasm. I would be willing to argue all day that our district sizes and the number of teams making the playoffs is ridiculous, but yes, three years is not enough time to see a definite impact.

I usually spend way too much time thinking on that one myself. I can almost always make my way around the other common grammatical slip-ups (lie, lay, lain/lay, laid, laid, etc.), but I always have to sit and think on that one for longer than I should.

How would you divide the classes RRR?

I wouldn't have classes at all, but IF numbers are going to matter they should matter, and the classes should be on a scale of 0 to 400 then 400 to 800 and so on. Just lumping them into groups based on where they are sequentially is not right.

I really do not believe that the change has cause a significant negative impact on anyone. True, the titles are watered down a bit more (although I think it could be argued that they were watered down when there were four titles up for grabs). But I don't see any clear evidence that the overall quality of football being played in KY has gone down in the past two years on account of this change.

 

Here in the Bardstown area they would disagree with you wholeheartedly.

 

Both Bardstown and Bethlehem had great seasons in 2006. When it came time to line up the schedules for 2007, Bethlehem had to find six non-district opponents (it's now seven since Beth Haven dropped FB) and Bardstown had to find seven. Naturally, few similar-sized schools wanted to have anything to do with them, so both ended up having to play most of their non-district games against schools much larger than they, in most cases. As a result, the past two seasons were pretty hard on both teams.

 

With both teams coming off losing records in the 2007-08 schedule cycle, it wasn't any surprise they were able to arrange much more manageable schedules for the 2009-10 cycle.

 

Bardstown coach David Clark told me a while back that while he's not necessarily opposed to six classes, per se, he would like to see more required games -- i.e., you have to play your district games, plus a set amount of games against the teams in the other district in your region.

 

Made a lot of sense to me. Plus, I think it could lend itself to some interesting wrinkles in how playoff positioning is decided.

:you honestly think a kid thinks about that after winning a state championship. Well there are 5 other teams who won it, so we really are not the best. That is the furthest thing from any of their minds, and should be. Six classes or not, its still a great accomplishment to win a state championship and something they can be VERY VERY proud of to say for the rest of their lives.

I don't think the state championships have been on Thanksgiving since 1991. Is there a huge push to go back to that date?

I believe Tennessee does something like this. It isn't opposite district, but rather you play in a group that combines Class A and AA. That gives you more required games with similar sized neighbor schools.

I can give a lot of example's of teams that miss the playoffs going 9-2 during that time which made it tough for most programs. It is also not a reach for a team in a two playoff team system to go 9-1 and miss the playoffs that is far worse then a 0-10 making it imo. The two team playoffs system would be a huge bust and it would hurt football in this state most part.

Amen. Looking at the 1990 district standings, which was the last year of two teams making the playoffs, I readily see several teams that missed the playoffs with great records:

 

Harrodsburg, 7-2

Caldwell County, 9-2

Hancock County, 7-3

Anderson County, 9-2

Fleming County, 8-3

Russell County, 7-3

Highlands, 8-3

Rockcastle County, 9-2

Breathitt County, 7-4

Clark County, 7-3

Holmes, 8-3

 

And that's just one season.

What I would like to see is the six classes divided into 36 teams each. Perhaps three or four classes would need 37 teams. Then each region will have a 4-team district and a 5-team district. Drop the season from 10 games to 9 and eliminate the in-season bye. The first week of the playoffs would be the play-in week, which means as long as you didn't finish last in your district, you would get a bye during that week.

If where talking about the classes being water down, it starts with these teams. Why should a team make the playoffs....if you can't win more than half of you games?

Still think the teams that won championships with 4 classes are still winning the championships with 6.... And the gap for 6A is pretty large, 660-1420? Thats a rather large space.

 

That was my thought from the beginning. It doesn't change the "who", just the "how many".
