Highlands opened defense of their Class 5A state title with a 19-8 win over Manual. Austin Collinsworth rushed for 78 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns in his first game since making the switch to running back.

Murray took advantage of five Madisonville turnovers, including two in the first quarters, to beat the Maroons 21-6. Madisonville has not beaten Murray since 1960.

Fort Campbell opened defense of their Class 2A football title in impressive fashion, knocking off Tennessee Class 3A Christ Presbyterian Academy 55-26. Falcon quarterback Antonio Andrews ran for 206 yards and four touchdowns and completed 7-of-14 passes for 158 yards and two more scores.

Brandon Sigler rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns and caught six passes for 53 yards as Caldwell County beat Calloway County 34-7. Caldwell’s defense held Calloway to minus-six yards rushing.

Mayfield quarterback Luke Guhy was 11-of-15 passing for 218 yards and three touchdowns, and Tyrese Murrell added 206 rushing yards and two scores as the Cardinals blasted Marshall County 43-14. Xavier Shelton hauled in five passes for 156 yards.

Hopkinsville scored 17 fourth quarter points to shock Paducah Tilghman 17-14. David Cohoon kicked a 30-yard field goal with 1:33 for the difference. Tilghman missed a 25-yard attempt at the end.

Lone Oak scored all 58 of their points in the first half en route to a 58-6 win over Ballard Memorial. Jay Starks caught four passes for 156 yards. However, Lone Oak’s defense proved to be just as dominant, limiting Ballard to minus—39 yards rushing and recovering four Bomber fumbles.

Glasgow won Rick Wood’s debut as head coach, knocking off Warren East 26-14 in the T.J. Samson Bowl. The Scotties, who were winless last year, rushed for 259 yards, led by Tavion Parrish’s 129 yards and three touchdowns. Prior to the game, Warren East learned they lost quarterback Andrew Alvey, who threw for over 1,000 yards last year, for the season with a knee injury.

Channing Fugate got the 2009 season off to a fast start, taking the opening kickoff back 86 yards for a touchdown to help Breathitt County blow out Mercer County 58-24. The Tennessee commitment ran 14 times for 208 yards and added a 42-yard punt return for a score. Bobcat quarterback Haddix completed five passes for 104 yards and three scores.

Greenwood quarterback Ty Downing completed 9-of-13 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a fourth as Greenwood won 43-0 at Portland, Tennessee. It was Greenwood’s first season opening win since 2004.

Allen County-Scottsville ran for 362 yards in pummeling Butler County 41-15. AC-S quarterback Cory Cooper ran for 152 yards and two scores and added 88 yards passing.

Russellville nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback in their game at Franklin-Simpson. Down 28-14 with 2:29 left in the game, Russellville quarterback D.J. Quarles connected with Damien Elam on an 80-yard pass that set up a short touchdown run. After recovering the onside kick, Quarles scored on a 4-yard run with no time on the clock to cut the deficit to 28-27. Russellville opted to go for two but couldn’t convert as Franklin-Simpson escaped with the one-point win.

Rees MacShara ran for 119 yards on 13 carries to help Boyle County blitz Johnson Central 49-7. The Rebels broke the game open with 21 points in the second quarter and outgained the Eagles 362-95. Not happy with some of Boyle County’s playcalling in the fourth quarter, Johnson Central head coach Jim Matney told the Danville Advocate-Messenger they will likely not play Boyle again next year. “We didn’t think they needed to be running reverses and passes in the fourth quarter up 42, and we’re probably going to do that (with the contract),” he said.

It was a bad night for Danville, who fumbled the ball five times in the first quarter and lost two quarterbacks to injury in their 48-21 loss to Mason County. Royals quarterback Neal Pawsat threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns.

The Colonels led 33-14 in the fourth quarter before LexCath began their comeback. Whitley County had nearly 500 yards of offense, led by Josh Wynn’s 136 rushing yards.

Travis Jones rushed for 176 yards and two scores to lead Russell to a 21-0 win over East Carter.

Ryan Wilson threw for 125 yards and ran for 102 more as Dixie Heights opened the season with a 19-7 win over Newport Central Catholic.

Streaks

Three long losing streaks ended over the weekend. Bishop Brossart won their first-ever football game after 20 straight losses to begin their program. The Mustangs beat Betsy Layne 22-19.

Lawrence County snapped a 17-game losing streak with a 54-20 win over Paintsville, and Glasgow broke a 12-game skid with a win over Warren East.

Fort Knox lost to Bethlehem and is in the midst of a 33-game losing streak that dates back to the final game of the 2005 season. Morgan County (20), Bracken County (19), and South Oldham (17) also look to end long losing streaks this year.

However, those streaks pale in comparison to Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee (down the road a bit from Monroe County, Ky.), who snapped a 61-game losing streak dating back to 2002. The Class 1A Bulldogs beat Oakdale 28-12, giving first-year head coach Kyle Shoulders a win in his debut. Oakdale has lost 29 of their last 31 games.

Games to Watch This Week

  • Henry Clay vs. Central in the Fayette County Invitational at Tates Creek - Central continues their tough trek through the early part of the schedule against 6A Henry Clay. You might see some speed in this one.
  • Pulaski County vs. Somerset in the Ray Correll Bowl - Pulaski may have got caught looking ahead to this one, losing to North Laurel in their season opener. Always a good rivalry game here.
  • Raceland at Ashland Blazer - Raceland pulled a rabbit out of their hat to beat Boyd County, setting up this week's rivlary game against Week One winners
  • Christian County vs. Franklin, Tenn. - Franklin is coached by former Hopkinsville skipper Craig Clayton. His team was 13-2 last year and the Tennessee Class 5A runners-up. So was Christian County, except in Kentucky 5A. Colonels head coach Steve Lovelace was a long-time assistant under Clayton at Hopkinsville before taking the Christian County job.
  • Simon Kenton vs. Newport Central Catholic - Miles Simpson makes his 2009 debut against the Thorobreds, who look to avoid an 0-2 start.

Scribe, I as I'm sure many others appreciate and look forward to your notebooks. Thanks:thumb:

Great job O’mighty Scribe Master. :notworthy:

Thanks so much...great information.

Hope this becomes regular reading.

Can't wait for another Friday Night!!!:dancingpa

Typo in the Collinsworth part, he switched to rb not qb.

Great to see the return of the Scribes Notebook, great job.

Danville did have a bad night. I hope practice will cure alot of the problems. I know in the past Danville has looked rough during pre-season scrimmages. This was just their second outing facing an opponent this year, and I know they didn't get very much contact in practice this summer, it's funny how that old football will pop out of your arms when someone lays a lick on you. With that being said maybe the Ads can make a marked improvement against Franklin County Saturday at the Bob Allen Pigskin Classic. I hope our Q-backs are back Saturday.

Just to add to what Scribe posted.

Belfry lost its first regular season contest since the 2006 season.

Awesome notebook info Scribe.:thumb: It is greatly appreciated.
