July 20, 200917 yr My Mexican American daughter in law put things in perspective for me awhile back. I made the comment that when I was in the Air Force and went to San Antonio and felt like I was in Mexico with all the Mexicans living there. She replied "Well it was Mexico until you all took it." Now if I lived in that part of the country around the border I can see where it be to my benefit to speak Spanish. Living 25 hours from the Mexican border not so much. She was able to land a pretty good job because of being bi-lingual, but more so for being able to speak English than Spanish.

July 20, 200917 yr They can't sue a Catholic school. They could sue a public school district if it was a public school. It was in the early 1990's and they did and they won. I can't remember if it was the Chicagoland area or in Michigan.

July 21, 200917 yr Maybe English is not recognized by the Federal Government as the official language because they don’t want to offend the millions of migrant or illegal aliens in this country, but the last time I went to school English was a core course from Kindergarten through college, while Spanish was a foreign language.You didn't go through school in Hialeah, Florida or the West Side of Miami. English is the second language there. Many, and I mean at least half, of the residents of that area, the majority being US citizens, don't speak English, period. Before you think small, realize that population of that part of the Miami/Dade metroplex is about the same as the population of Kentucky. Even in Tampa, I hear the phrase "no habla ingles" a lot. However, Florida's official language has been English, since being made so by amendment to the state constitution in 1988. If memory servers me right, it was to protect the state from this very type of incident.

July 21, 200917 yr We agree 110%. But I am willing to bet that there is are several attorneys who would take the case and sue. If you are on vacation in Mexico and the valet accidently injures you with a cart, can you not sue, because you aren't a Mexican citizen?
November 5, 200916 yr I'm a little late on this thread...but KRS 411.190 says the state has absolutely NO liability to this unfortunate soul or his family. It has nothing to do with his nationality, the sign or his ability to read it. The Recreational Use Statute basically says if a landowner opens his property to the public for recreational use and does NOT charge a fee there is no liability for ordinary negligence.
