Able to interact with the fastest growing segment of our population. Something I for one would like to do. I don't know about your area of Kentucky, but in many parts of the state, the ability to speak Spanish will get you a better job.

I would also be more skilled if I went to law school or learned to knit, but that doesn’t mean I should have to do either. What about Chinese, French, or Arabic? How many different languages should we have to learn to placate the different ethnic groups in this country?

Those skills are specialized and pertinent only to certain professions.

Conagra Foods is a food processing company. If you look at a lot of the foods you buy at the grocerie store, you will probably find out that it comes from Conagra food.

In my part of the state, Mexicans who can speak English are the ones trying to get jobs.

So they learned English and are now seeking employment...good for them.

 

I have several friends and know of several instances where people got high-paying white collar jobs because of their ability to speak Spanish. I work in the banking field and it is a highly sought after skill. At my previous sales job, my manager desperately wanted someone who was fluent in Spanish and told me that if someone would've applied they would've been hired over me. You can sit by with this attitude and watch the rest of the country pass you by. But, the fact remains that Spanish speaking people are coming into this country at a high rate and the kids being born today are better off if they can speak both English and Spanish. It is common in Europe for children to learn multiple languages...for once I wish the United States would catch up.

 

This would also apply to people who are living in this country and only speak Spanish. They better learn English pretty quick or it will be a hinderance.

No they aren't. Americans won't do those jobs. My wife used to work in Adult Education and Job Placement and she couldn't get Americans to go work there or that window factory in Boyd Co. But the Mexicans would and gladly took those jobs. It didn't matter how bad off the Americans were they simply refused to work there and wanted to continue to collect checks, but the Mexicans would rather work any job than leech off the government. They can make 10 times here at Conagra than they can at a Delphi plant in Juarez and the conditions and 50 times better.

I'm not familiar with the company, area, or situation. But if it's anything like the farming jobs in my hometown area; than this is usually the case.
