In regards to part 1... I don't think English should necessarily be a "requirement," but at the same time if you're going to live in this country, you should be able to understand the native language enough to survive... Why should born citizens of this country have to adapt to fit the needs of illegal aliens?

That is what I have been saying for years. Why should we have to learn Spanish? More often than not too many things foreign to this country get more fair treatment than things that have been a part of this country from the beginning. Having to adjust to things not native of this country only because people are flooding it with different ideas and beliefs, and most doing it illegally is not American in the least.

I think we are in agreement that it is a very prudent thing to do and something I would recommend to a person immigrating to ANY country. But if they don't want to...well, to each their own. While I think it is stupid and careless for an immigrant in this country to not learn English, it is also not the government's job to force people to be responsible.

 

I also think that if I had children, I would insure that they learn Spanish to a point where they are fluent. The more helpful skills you have, the better. I know some might not like it, but for better or worse, knowing Spanish is a very prized skill to have. At my job (we deal with businesses in Puerto Rico), knowing Spanish almost guarantees you a hire.

Same reasoning is used in a Jewish family suing a Catholic School for having a Crucifix hanging in the hallway of the school. They found it offensive and infringing on their freedom of religion. Common sense would be "send him to a Jewish school", but NOOOOOOOOOOO, the Catholic school had to remove the Crucifix to accomodate one student. Where are the rights of the majority?

I know spanish. I'm no better off than if I knew Swahili. I suppose I couldn't disagree with your assumption any more than I do. The sign frankly could have been in every language and he'd have drown. Not the first drowning at Grayson lake, and those that preceded the Mexican in death by drowning were fluent in English.

 

As for the right to sue by someone being here illegally, perhaps that is the silliest argument I've heard here in quite some time, especially due to their own negligence.

I'm no legal expert, but:

 

There are univesal signs for many things, including no swimming. I think that would be prudent in all areas where a warning is required to be posted, as there are English speaking, American born citizens who can't read. Where I work, all hazardous chemicals, danger zones, etc, have universal picture signs posted, as we have dozens of other languages spoken within our workplace, by workers as well as visitors.

 

If there is a negligence determined, I would think that any person, regardless of their immigration status, should have the right to sue. Public safety, IMO is a safety issue, not a rights issue.

I'm not sure I am with you on the 9/11 analogy but as to your other point I agree 100%. Sometimes bad things happen. That is why it is called an accident.

I would also be more skilled if I went to law school or learned to knit, but that doesn’t mean I should have to do either. What about Chinese, French, or Arabic? How many different languages should we have to learn to placate the different ethnic groups in this country?
