The fact remains that companies are in it to make money. If they have people who will work at a certain wage than that is the wage they will pay. I don't have issues with it. I don't see how these jobs are being taken from Americans.

They provide a livable wage and housing but Americans won't do the work. So they hire Mexicans who are just thankful to have food on the table and work extremely hard.

 

I've been to mexico fellas- and not a vacation- I've been in Juarez ministering to these people. Believe it or not they are humans and God loves them. They are just trying their best to give their families a better life and provide for their kids. If any of you had to live like they did you want to risk your life to climb the fence too.

I don't believe you need to be a citizen of the US to sue inside of US/state courts.

Well you may have better info than I have, but some of the people I have talked to that used to work there, that is exactly what they told me. They told me that Conagrao, actually it was Cooks at the time, wouldn't give them any cost of living raises, and that they brought in all of the Mexicans to work their jobs at lower rates.

So they learned English and are now seeking employment...good for them.

 

I have several friends and know of several instances where people got high-paying white collar jobs because of their ability to speak Spanish. I work in the banking field and it is a highly sought after skill. At my previous sales job, my manager desperately wanted someone who was fluent in Spanish and told me that if someone would've applied they would've been hired over me. You can sit by with this attitude and watch the rest of the country pass you by. But, the fact remains that Spanish speaking people are coming into this country at a high rate and the kids being born today are better off if they can speak both English and Spanish. It is common in Europe for children to learn multiple languages...for once I wish the United States would catch up.

 

This would also apply to people who are living in this country and only speak Spanish. They better learn English pretty quick or it will be a hinderance.

I agree with what you are saying. I would add though that it is common in Europe probably more so because the countries are so much smaller. The U.S. is pretty much the same size as all of Europe. If IN, KY, OH, and TN all spoke different languages I would guess most kids born in those states would learn multiple languages.

I'm no legal expert, but:

 

There are univesal signs for many things, including no swimming. I think that would be prudent in all areas where a warning is required to be posted, as there are English speaking, American born citizens who can't read. Where I work, all hazardous chemicals, danger zones, etc, have universal picture signs posted, as we have dozens of other languages spoken within our workplace, by workers as well as visitors.

 

If there is a negligence determined, I would think that any person, regardless of their immigration status, should have the right to sue. Public safety, IMO is a safety issue, not a rights issue.

 

Not pointing fingers at anyone in this thread, but conversations like these tells what some people feel about "outsiders" or people that are "different" then themselves, what is that word im looking for?

 

You bring up some very good points RM! A sign with a simmer with a red circle and a red line through the swimmer is the universal sign for no swimming, as well as danger if you swim, not the word danger. As you stated, there are many Americans who cannot read either, and I am willing to say that in that region there may be a higher percentage of those people who cannot read.

 

I also agree that anyone, American, a legal alien or illegal alien, if there was negligence then they can sue. BUT, do I personally think that there was negligence in this case? NO!

 

BTW, How does what RM said have anything to do with 9/11 or the people that flew those planes? It has nothing even remotely in common.

 

So of you know that I was in Romania for the month of June, I do not know how to speak much Romanian, but trying to pick up on common words. But If I see water over there such as in a river or a lake, I know the risks, I do not need to have a sign posted to tell me, but if I see a sign near the water and I did not understand it, I would think it had something to do with the river/lake or whatever it is.

 

It's like a person who got hit by a car trying to sue a city because they had no crosswalks marked on the road on where to cross, it's COMMON SENSE! Use the corner, common sense on where and when to swim

 

It's not a language that is the problem or issue, it's COMMON SENSE! And as I have been saying for years, common sense is not common anymore, a lot of people are ignorant. We should not reward these people, or pay off their families because of ignorance.

 

But, we ALL should work to understand everyone else, to say that someone who wants to live in the US needs to learn English isn't the thing to do, treating everyone, no matter what language they speak as equals is what people should be doing.

I work for that state and don't get cost of living increases...heck our raises our frozen for the last 2 years and now likely the next 3 years! Welcome to the world of work! It sucks and you don't get coddled, but if you want your family to eat to work at everything as if working for the Lord (Colossians 3:23).

 

As for Conagra I know wages lowered when they bought it out from Cooks but that happens. I don't believe it was to bring in Mexicans though, it was purely a business decision. And working food processing is not a desirable job but if you need a job you do what you have to do. So the problem was they couldn't get people to work out there. There is a window manufacturing place here that has the same problem. The guy has told my wife several times in the past they would love to hire more Americans but if they do take the jobs they won't work.

 

If it makes some you feel any better there are lots of Spanish speaking people enrolled in Boyd County Adult Ed's English as a Second Language program. There is even a waiting list to get in. And they aren't using your tax dollars getting government benefits because you know...they work.

That definitely plays a role and for years there wasn't much incentive for U.S. citizens to be bilingual. But now I believe that incentive is there.

Great comment. I get very upset when some people claim to be my Christian brothers and sisters yet disparage other nationalities...ummmm we are all made by the same God. I am no better than anyone else just because of the strip of the land I was born on. They are just valuable to God as I am. And newsflash God could care less about man made political borders. We are all equally loved and it doesn't matter where we are from or how someone got to you. I've heard someone preach a sermon on the Good Samaritan and then heard the very same person talk very unfavorably about our church for supporting missions in Mexico. It's just very sad to me.

 

I often wonder if we Christians looked at the immigration issue from a different stand point. We are the most churched nation in the country...shouldn't we be rejoicing that people from other nations are coming here? Their chance of being exposed to the gospel is increased tenfold! These people are here and they need Jesus! Maybe, just maybe God is sending them here for a reason. Maybe if we had done a better job of being missional and sent more people into the missions field things would be different.

The question of the legality of the sign shouldn't be in question. In the state of our current economy, are you telling me that we should pull down the sign and put do not swim in every known language just in case someone from a distant land might happen by and want to do a cannonball?
