Coach Flynn was at the KBA today to watch his Highland players, already working hard as I knew he would. Good to see and talk to him today.

I doubt very seriously he tries to dodge Holmes. That will become the new biggest rivalry in NKY over the next few years IMO.

 

Has the potential to be a heck of a game next year! Highlands has a loaded class of seniors for next season and Holmes will be a top team in the state based on returnees.

Just received official notification in a press release from the high school:

 

(May 15, 2009) Highlands High School named Mike Flynn as the Boys’ Basketball Head Coach in a press conference held at the high school this afternoon.

 

Flynn, who has been in education for 27 years, is principal of the Northern Kentucky Cooperative for Educational Services (NKCES) Regional School Programs in Cold Spring.

 

Flynn has held the position of head basketball coach at Warren Central, Holmes, Ashland Blazer and Bourbon County high schools. With four state tournament appearances, the distinction of being one of only five coaches in Kentucky history to coach three different schools in the Sweet Sixteen, and a career coaching record of 429-243, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position.

 

Principal Brian Robinson stated, “Mike Flynn impressed the selection committee with his enthusiasm, knowledge and vision for the Highlands basketball program. We are confident that he will be a great influence on our young men and will help the Bluebirds remain competitive in a very strong 9th region.”

 

“Talking with Mike is a clinic on how to coach and educate,” said Dale Mueller, athletic director. “I am extremely excited for the basketball players and the Fort Thomas community.”

 

“It’s very gratifying to know that my last job as a Kentucky high school basketball coach will also be the best job I’ve had as a Kentucky high school basketball coach,” Flynn stated.

 

Flynn succeeds Willie Schlarman who stepped down from the position in anticipation of the upcoming birth of his first child. Flynn will begin serving as head coach for the 2009-10 school year.

Rather than the negatives, what are the positives? What kind of system did Coach Flynn run at Holmes/Ashland? What can we expect? Has any of the staff been named?

Met coach Flynn at the AAU torney this weekend checking out his kids and the competion I'm sure ! He seems to be a quality guy with great enthusiasm and can't wait to get to work. He should enjoy plenty of sucess at HHS.

I wanted to let you know that Jack Stewart is a up and coming big man for Highlands. I was disappointed I didn't get to see much of him this week-end down at the AAU State Tourney. What I did see, when he got in, was very promising. He looks well rounded on defense and offense a force to be reckoned with.

I'd say Vorie's senior year was thier best shot. Really as screwed up as the classes were in the program, they really didn't have much of chance. Hopefully the new coach will have a plan to involve the youngsters and have players developing in each class.

I cannot get into whether they should or should not have won the region.......Obviously this is a change in coaching philosophies with Mike Flynn coming in vs a Wille Schlarman style. Will it be more appealing to play? On paper you would think that Coach Flynn could get more players out to play based on what is perceived as a more "fun" style of play (or be more encouraging towards kids playing unlike the issues with this year's seniors). Both have had success at their style and you cannot judge success on whether you win a 9th region title or not. If the coach is maximizing the talent he has and runs a system that best fits his players then you have success.

 

While I hate the style Coach Schlarman uses he did have success some years and a few they under achieved (opinion not fact). Basing this and asking the question about 9th region titles is off base.

And one thing that this thread just reeks of including some Willie supporters is the lack of involving younger players in the program and the head coach building the program from the middle school up. Speaking of which what is the status on the 6th grade program. If Highlands does this I hope they are smart enough not to hire a parent but rather get someone who can bring all three grade schools' players together and be impartial. If they start this and it goes bad...........they will never have it again.

Really what is the status of the 6th grade program? It is going to be up to coach Flynn to provide the final push to get this started and it should be his decision on who coaches the team. What makes you think that a parent is going to coach the team if they do have one? Not only will there be kids from the three public elementary schools, there will also be kids from St. Thomas, St. Catherine and maybe even St. Therese. There is some athletic talent in this class, but that does not always equate to success on the field, court or diamond.
