rockmom Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I love Colin Powell! I could have voted for him any number of times if he'd have run for President. But, IMO, on a purely childish level, the fact that he ticked off Rush Limbaugh solidifies my support of him in any future political offices he may seek! Rush Limbaugh says Colin Powell should become a Democrat For the record, I agree with Colin Powell: During a speech on Monday, Powell said the "the Republican Party is in deep trouble" and said the GOP would be better off without Limbaugh, according to a report by the National Journal. "I think what Rush does as an entertainer diminishes the party and intrudes or inserts into our public life a kind of nastiness that we would be better to do without," Powell said
westsider Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Powell was right on target with his remarks ... he remains one of this country's classiest gentlemen. I could have easily voted for him myself.

Plato Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I agree. Rush and others who simply rant and rave don't help anyone.
FC Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I too would have voted for Colin Powell. I think Colin Powell got a raw deal from President Bush and Dick Chaney. The fact that he opposed President Bush and VP Chaney might have a lot to do with why he is on the “outs” with the Republican leadership.
CoachBuckett Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I tend to agree. I find me and my republican friends agree on several issues. But Rush is a joke. He can't be honest about the issues. (not that many others are.)
Hearsay Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I disagree. While I respect Powell as a man and his personal accomplishments, I believe as a moderate politician his compromise on several issues that in my opinion he should have been uncompromising on make him appear spineless and ineffective. A gentleman does not resort to personal attacks in the media, but instead settles issues privately and face-to-face. That means that neither Rush nor Powell are gentleman. I also whole heartedly disagree with the post about honesty about the issues. Rush I believe is bluntly and brutally honest, and people don't like that he is right. He is an arrogant horses butt in the way is says it, but most of the time he is right.
leatherneck Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I agree with Powell in re Rush, but I don't think I'd have voted for him as President. It's nothing I can put my finger on. Maybe it's just because he was Army.

As much as you appear to believe that Rush is bluntly and brutally honest, and that people don't like him because he's right....I believe he is bluntly and brutally trying to influence politics with his own opinions, which I don't believe are right.

The people that don't like Rush don't like because he's "right" ... they dislike him because of his pompousness and arrogance.

He is definitely trying to influence politics. Apparently doing a decent job of that, too.
gchs_uk9 Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 He is definitely trying to influence politics. Apparently doing a decent job of that, too. How is telling every moderate in the Republican party to leave considered "doing a good job?"
Hearsay Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 How is telling every moderate in the Republican party to leave considered "doing a good job?" Well, the statement was that he was influencing politics. He certainly influenced it during the Republican Revolution in the early 90's. Now, he has the Democrats' panties in a knot and considering Fairness Doctrines. He has almost every politician out there making speeches tha include his name. The current mantra is that he stands for what the Republican Party is. I'd say he has influence. As for his statement about moderates, there are elements of that I agree with. I think the moderates have compromised bedrock conservatism. There are certain things you just don't back down on, and the moderates have. On many issues, "moderates" are spineless cowards who cave at the first sign of trouble, so they can be called "bipartisan." Look, just because the country has moved centrist doesn't mean a party has to or should. It may mean they lose elections. It may even mean they die out. But you don't change your principles to win elections, and I respect Rush for saying that.
