My 6 year old girl predicted the winner. As the horses were being escorted around the track towards the gate, she said " I like the #8 horse to win". I ask her "why?" and she said "the horse escorting it to the gate is pretty"

can't argue with that logic.

I really don't like how they interview the jockey while he is still on the horse, literally thirty seconds after the big W...give the guy a chance to calm down. I couldn't understand a word he was saying.

I think his Cajun accent makes understanding him a little more difficult, especially when he's as excited as he was after winning the Derby. I love the accent, though.

He was riding a horse that no one had even heard of. A little horse in comparison to the bigger thoroughbreds. No one was talking about this horse AT ALL in the weeks leading up to the Derby. He just squeezed his little horse through a hole barely large enough to fit a horse through, and left the "deserving" horses in the dust. Not only does his little horse deserve the credit, but he absolutely deserves to whoop it up. He may be the best jockey around right now. He balances the risk and he's come out twice on top with horses everyone says shouldn't have been in the Derby.

 

Anyone who thinks an athlete (jockey, or any) should "act like they've been there" doesn't understand how emotional those athletes are about their job.

 

You don't like him, don't bet him. But I'll bet there are a lot of people who will bet him now BECAUSE they'll remember Bo-rail and his celebration, and why he was celebrating.

 

As to the trainer, he was asked more questions this week about his bum leg and the drive from NM to KY than about his horse. Yep, he has every right to say "In your face!" to the media.

 

You make a couple of great points. However, did Pat Day act this way when he won the Derby aboard Lil E Tee? What about Mike Smith on Giacamo? I have no problem with a first pump here or a look towards the sky there, but to act like he has aboard his two Derby winners is a little overboard to me. To be honest, I don't have near as big of a problem with acting this way after winning the Derby as I do when he wins a NOTHING race. That's when he really drives me crazy.

I have never won the Derby, so I can't imagine how good that must feel.

 

I do think that Mine That Bird is getting lost in the publicity though. The rider is getting all the credit. While he rode a tremendous race, you can ask the horse to go, but if he doesn't have it, he doesn't have it. This little horse responded big time.

Then one year I was with my mother-in-law at the Breeders Cup and he walked by. She asked him if she could take his picture and he was so rude and impatient with her, that I NEVER bet on any horse he rode again. He drove me even more crazy after that. I was very glad when he retired.

 

I guess we all have our things, especially when gambling is concerned.

That's interesting. The one time I had a chance to meet Day he was the nicest man on the face of the world. He talked to me and 3 of my buddies like we had known him forever.

Did anybody else find it interesting that Fresian Fire, the favorite to win, ended up finishing second to last? Anyone have any insight to what happened with that horse?

 

I herd on the news today that Fresian Fire's front leg had recieved a laceration on it at the start of the race. They went on to say that the laceration came from the horseshoe on his back leg.

The trainer kind of seemed like a jerk. Anybody hear his comment during the interview after the race? First, he seemed a little put-off to even be interviewing. Then when asked about his trip to Louisville, he pretty rudely stated that with a derby win, maybe everyone will find something else to talk about other than his drive there.

 

While he was rude, the reporters question was stupid. That storyline was worn out and made NO difference in the condition of the race. How long were the Dubai horses on their airplane? Who Cares. Ask about the race! This is like a reporter interviewing someone that has just experienced a tragedy, and they ask what they are feeling! Give me a break! This reporter blew that interview IMO.

 

So did I. Reason being they (commentators) had told before how some of the other owners resented him for even having the horse in the Derby. Reports were that the other owners/trainers snubbed him saying that he was keeping other "deserving" horses out of the Derby. I will say had I not heard that I probably would have thought his comments were out of line.

 

I believe his statements were meant as an "in your face"/Toby Keith "how do you like me now" type comment for the ones that were snubbing him before.

Do you really expect jockeys at the track, who sometimes ride as many as eight mounts a day, to stop and pose for pictures? Away from the track, I can see where it would be a problem.

Do you really expect jockeys at the track, who sometimes ride as many as eight mounts a day, to stop and pose for pictures? Away from the track, I can see where it would be a problem.

 

Oh I fully understand WHY he acted like he did. However he didn't HAVE to act that way. We all have bad days and I guess that was one of his. Still, it was a bad impression.

A guy I work with put $100 to win on Mine The Bird. He's happier today. :lol:

 

A guest staying at the hotel put $20K on Mine The Bird to win. There was a huge party going on at the Lobby Bar later Derby night.

Congratulations! You are now the trainer of a Kentucky Derby winning horse... how long did it take you to get to the track?

 

Anyone else think that was stupid question? Sure, the fact that he drove his own horse 21+ hours to Louisville made for a good story, but that story had already been told so many times before. Why not ask him if he thought Mine That Bird could pull off the triple-crown? Why not ask if he was headed for the Preakness? At least disguise the 21-hour drive story in another question... so how long will it take you to drive Mine That Bird to Maryland? Stupid questions deserve to get snide remarks.

 

So this is what our world has come to? Anyone asked the wrong question (in a seemingly innocent manner) has the right to be rude without any backlash from the viewing public? Call me old-fashioned, but I still believe in golden rule. If someone is nice to me, I'm going to be nice back--regardless of the direction the conversation takes. And yeah, there were probably better questions he could have been asked. However, I don't really see that as an excuse for that kind of behavior.
