Every time I see the lineup this makes me angry. Phillips is not a 4 hitter.

Actually since they've been outscored 84-72 on the season the Reds are very lucky to be 10-9. The offense has got to get going or it won't last long.

No, actually they have one of the worst offenses in the league and more than likely that isn't going to change given the current roster. They don't have the hitting to play .600 baseball. Not going to happen.

Right now they have some of the worse hitting and fielding in baseball. I think they are very, very, LUCKY to be .500. I would be shocked if this current roster can maintain a .500 pace through midsummer.

:thumb:This is a horrible offensive team. They are seriously below average at catcher, shortstop, third base, left field and only marginal in centerfield. Their defense at first, third and left is also below average. The current roster cannot help the pitchers out enough to compete this season.

However, since hitting 23 homers with 91 RBIs in 144 games during the 2006 season he has hit 25 homers 139 homers in 254 games. At age 33 there is no reason to expect his numbers to go back up. His batting average and OBP has went down for 3 straight years and his OPS is barely above .700 the last 2 seasons. He's also not known for being anthing more than a mediocre handler of pitcher or defensive catcher. He may be an upgrade from last year but he's in the bottom half of MLB catchers.

First off this is about the Reds offense and the fact that Hernandez is a below average catcher. It has nothing to do with the Red Sox but since you mentioned it Varitek has been in a steep decline--that's not a secret. It has been bad enough that the Red Sox considered trading for a catcher rather than bring him back in spite of his defense, ability to handle a pitching staff and leadership. Hernandez is known for none of those things. I noted that Hernandez had a good 2006 but has regressed since then. So if you want to compare the last 2 years plus their start this season, and since neither are getting any younger I don't think you can expect either to suddenly become 25 again, then it looks like this:

Jason Varitek .238 Avg. 34 HRs 110 RBIs

 

So, actually there is very little difference between the two offensively and since Varitek was one of the worst everyday players with the bat last season I guess you could say that Hernandez is right there with him, huh? The biggest difference is this: Tek is an exceptional handler of pictchers, he has 2 World Series rings and has caught 4 no hitters, a Major League record. Hernandez is known for a decent arm but little else. He'll hit a few homers but that's about it.

 

The problem for the Reds is they have a horrible offense. They need production wherever they can get it. The Red Sox don't have that problem, they've already proven they can win a World Series and make it to Game 7 of the ALCS without any signifigant contribution from Varitek. But if it makes you feel better to know that Hernandez is averaging 8 more hits and 10 more RBIs per year than Varitek then by all means live it up. Varitek, even at his age is a much better catcher than Hernandez.

 

The Red Sox also have Youkilis, Pedroia, Lowell, Ellsbury, Bay, Drew and Ortiz to lead the offense. The Reds, well, they don't......

I'd have no problem with either Janish or Rosales getting some starts at 3rd. I just think that, since Janish is on the ballclub already, it'd make more sense to give him a few starts beore we dig deeper.

 

For this club to compete, we need Edwin to start producing. As down on him as I am, I realize that he's still an integral part of this lineup. To send him down to AAA just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, particularly since we'd bring up another unproven guy.

 

Janish has looked solid so far this season. Let's give him a few AB's at 3rd & see what happens. I don't expect much, but it may be enough to light a fire under Edwin's behind & make him start producing. That alone would be worth it.

 

I don't see the reasoning in bringing up Rosales to platoon him somewhere. If Dusty & Co. think he can be the everyday 3rd Baseman (or SS, LF, 2B), then by all means, bring him up. I'm all for giving young guys a chance, especially when they're stroking the ball like Rosales is.

 

And, as I understand your argument, the only benefit of Rosales over Janish is the potential for power? That & removing Edwin from the lineup. :lol:

Off of the top of my head, I'm not sure that he's played any.

 

With that said, I'm confident that he'd do well defensively.
