April 18, 200917 yr Chavez, Ortega, the Castros.... How many more murderous thugs is going to buddy up with? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090418/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/cb_obama_summit
April 18, 200917 yr Let's give him a chance to change the relationships, you never know what will come about. I hope (and believe) he is not so naive to take some of these leaders at their word. He said actions speak louder than words, so it seems to show that he knows who he's dealing with.

The article mentions that after President Obama eased travel restrictions to Cuba on Tuesday, that Raul Casto suggested opening a dialogue on all things that separate the two countries. Obama suggested action in the form of freeing political prisoners. One thing that the past should have told us is that by ignoring those leaders that we disagree with does not make them go away or stop doing that in which we are against. I am in agreement with both of these posts.

I mean come on, we talked with the old Soviet Union, we shook hands with them and talked! They also had to prove what they were saying, and not just take them for their word. If we step up and show them and the world, that the US is going to be the ones who starts actions/talks ect, it goes along way. We can't solve things if one side won't move, and clearly the US is the "adult" and civilized one, we have to be the ones who steps up. In reguards to Cuba, clealry the US actions in the past 40 years has not worked, both parties.

Every president has met with, dealt with, or worked with some very unsavory and downright horrible leaders of other nations. Reagan bolstered Hussein during the 80's and then his succesor went to war with him in '90-'91. Leaders in Central America were often photo oped with American Presidents and many of those despots did everything they could to keep their people enslaved in poverty and/or crush their opposition. How can shaking hand with Chavez be any different than when Kennedy met with and shook hands with Kruschev, a many who openly said, "WE will bury you" from the podium?

It would be great if he can make a difference by meeting with these individuals, but history shows that you have to deal with them with the understanding they are evil people or they will bite you on the backside. Reagan shook up Gorby by walking out the talks in Iceland. This and other events helped to bring down the USSR. If Obama shows then he is willing to play hardball and not softball, he might pull off something. I hope he does not play softball like Clinton and Bush did with North Korea.

We have sided with unsavory individuals because they were the enemies of our enemies. Sometimes it still bit us on the backside. Kennedy did shake hands with Krushchev, but later he played hardball with the Cuban missiles and Krushchev.

One thing that the past should have told us is that by ignoring those leaders that we disagree with does not make them go away or stop doing that in which we are against. As long as walking up and immediately and apologizing for the US's terrible ways over the last 200 years is NOT the dialogue, then maybe it is a start. It's simple to "make nice" if you wade in making us out to be the bad guys right off the bat. The "failed policies of the past" that BHO keeps repeating over and over and over and over are beginning to look like they go all the way back to when this country was established in his view. I'm certain these leaders we may have ignored in the past are chomping at the bits when our submissive, weak leader arrives on their soil to bash our great country. Didn't BHO pose (grinning like a possum eating saw briars) for some kind of picture with chavez giving him a book about how backwards the US is? None of this is surprising at all to me. I expect nothing less from a President that has NEVER had to make an executive decision in his life.:puke: I'm a proud American...And I'm not ready to start changing my country to please socialistic/thug leaders around the world. Call me what you wish, but I'd like to see BHO IMPEACHED!

Just because alot of the conservative commentators keep repeating the same talking points about Obama being submissive, weak, etc. doesn't make it so. The country voted for a new direction in foreign policy, a direction of talking before bombs drop and boots hit the ground. I couldn't be happier with the direction things are going in this respect:dancingpa
