I've said many times that Mason County was fortunate to defeat St. Henry in the first round. I just thought that it would be interesting to watch two very talented teams with such different strengths.

Well sure anything can happen...if we want to play that game. But, looking at it in an analytical way, I think Mason County was better and would consistently beat Holmes if they played multiple games.

 

Could Holmes beat them? Sure. Just like Elliott County or Central could have beat Holmes on the right day or if they played enough.

I won't say that Jonathon Ferguson is as good at Lofton was, but he is a good shooter and he was not able to beat Holmes with the outside shot. The outside shot has to be used to defeat a team like Holmes, but if you don't have the inside game to go a long with a great shooter, Holmes will wear you out inside. I think that Holmes proved that repeatedly this past season, you have to have a great all around game to beat them.

 

I would take Holmes everyday of the week and twice on Saturday.:sssh:

That Mason County team was vulnerable in the post, as shown when Paducah Tilghman's Orlandus Hill (33 points and 21 rebounds) torched them in the quarterfinals in 2002 and in the first half against St. Henry in the first round in 2003.

 

If St. Henry's center, Michael Schmidt, didn't suffer a knee injury in that game, St. Henry probably wins the game.

2009 Holmes without a doubt. I have never seen a team as long and as athletic at Holmes this year. R. Johnson was an absolute pleasure to watch and will get a lot of D1 offers before the year is over.

 

Pittman, well what can I say, Pittman is one of the best, most athletic high school players that I have ever had the pleasure of watching, he plays so far above the rim. He can shoot the jumper or take it to the rack and finish with a tomahawk dunk that set the gym on fire.

 

And defensively, no one was even close to Holmes, Holmes plays hard nosed, in your face defense. Their defense is often overlooked. No team can play defense like Holmes does.

 

Boone was pretty close to Holmes in defense this year.

It can also be said that Holmes narrowly defeated an upset minded Boone Co. in the 9th Region Championship game. If that happens, this topic is not even being discussed.

 

The 2003 Ballard team had size, but that had little effect on Lofton and Company.
