2009 Elliott County Lions!!!

My faves would be any Clay squad during Farmer's tenure, they had some nice players with the Farmer brothers, Pennington, Woody Asher and Chadwell. I'm also very fond of the '95 Breck team, they were simply a great fundamental team.

I have been watching HS Basketball since 1969 when Central with Ron King and Otto Petty beat Ohio County in the final. During those 40 years the Elliott County Lions of 2006-2009 have been my favorite and most fun team to watch. After driving 8,000 miles this year to watch 33 Elliott games and watching nearly 50 Elliott games the past two years it has been the most enjoyable basketball of my life. I have a scrapbook full of the national and local news articles and will ask that they bury it with me in my coffin. This team will remain in my heart forever and the memories will never go away!!!

Thanks to Ethan, Evan, Ferg, Jon, Chris, Jared, and Timmy on making dreams come true for thousands!!! You are champions and overcomers!!! Here are some four year accomplishments:

 

1) Four year record of 106-22. Broke their own school record of 26 wins by finishing 2009 with 32 wins against only 3 losses.

2) Won four straight district titles, appeared in 4 straight region finals, and won 3 straight region finals.

3) Ferg becomes the 5th in all time KY HS Career scoring finishing with 3,377 points

4) Ethan, Evan, and Ferg score somewhere close or around 8,000 points during a career that spans back to their 8th grade year.

5) Ferg becomes the all time 16th region tournament career scoring leader

6) Ethan Faulkner wins 3 straight 16th Region MVP awards and is on the 2009 All State Tournament team

7) Ferg is the only freshman to win 16th Region Tournament MVP and also makes the 2007 All State Tournament team as a sophomore

 

Quite an accomplishment for a HS with a little over 300 students, and a county with less than 7,000 where the largest town is only 700.

 

To the Elliott County Team: Thanks for the most incredible ride of my life!!!

In order:

 

1) 1993 Marion County (Epps, Elton Scott, Michael Douglas)...the best Sweet 16 team I've ever seen.

 

2) 2003 Mason County (watching Lofton was magical)

 

3) 2007-2009 Elliott County (so sad their run is over)

 

4) 1995 Breckinridge County (had the best "team" mentality of any I've seen)

 

5) Clay County vs. Ballard (i.e. Richie vs. Allan...epic matchups)

That Warren Central team that won the title a few years back was fun to watch — Dewalt, especially.

I agree Batman. That was a very talented group of player on that Warren Central team.

My favorite team to watch was E'town with Barbour. He took over the Sweet 16 and carried them to a title with Saturday wins over Russellville and LexCath. I think he scored 42 in the morning and 31 in the evening.

 

Of course, I haven't been to the Sweet 16 that much.

 

From talking to people who go a lot, three teams seemed to garner the most praise...

 

1. Breckinridge County - From what I've heard about that team, if I could go back in team and watch one Sweet 16, that's the one I'd want to see.

 

2. Lafayette - Their last title team...a friend of mine said they were quick as lightning and absolutely refused to be defeated when they were playing.

 

3. Scott County - The year Rick Jones played so great and beat LexCath with the buzzer beater.

There have been few teams in Sweet 16 history that moved the ball as well and played as well together as that bunch.

I heard they were pretty incredible to watch. A friend of mine said when teams tried to press them they'd shoot layups and the ball would never touch the court. Whether he was exaggerating or not, the point was well taken. They beat the press the way you're supposed to, by passing the ball...but, not only beat it, they attacked it.

 

I really wish I could have seen that team. That's the only year I regret not going to the state tourny.

 

Plus, Mattingly was quite an athlete. He threw down a few dunks during that run, right?

I remember that he could definitely get off the floor. I don't remember if he had that many dunks ... I don't track that stuff, like some posters do. :sssh:

I just seemed to remember seeing a couple of highlights where he threw a couple down. I wouldn't remember so much, but I had them pegged as a team that relied on fundamentals and shooting with little athleticism. Then I see Mattingly at 6'5 slamming it home.
