I see nothing wrong if Whitley wants to use Highlands as a measuring stick.

Someone told me that Whitley's good 8th grade QB is going to stay back in the 8th grade again so that he will be able to start as a freshman after Lebanion graduates. I was kind of confused as how he could do this and be eligible for all 4 years in high school, but was assured that their was a plan in place that was already used by an 8th grade basketball player this year. Any truth to this? I would hate to see the kid lose his senior year.

I'm just guessing, but if he starts his freshman year he will be able to play his senior year. He will have had four years of varsity football. I think a problem may arise in his age. If he turns 19 before August of his senior year, then he will not be able to play.

As long as he doesn't play this year as an 8th grader twice then he could, but he cannot play 8th grade two years in a row, he would have to sit out this year and that isn't a good thing. This is all assuming that his birthdate isn't before August 1st.

Whitley has a very challenging schedule. Jim Black does a great job in preparing his team, and this schedule will help him to prepare his team for the post season. I do believe that they did graduate 2 different 1000 yard rushers but they return the offensive line, which will give the guys who are plugged into the vacancies a chance to replicate the efforts of the departed seniors.

I don't know if Whitley can again have the sparkling record that they had last year but they certianly have a chance to be just as good. Last year they were 12-2 and only lost to state champions in Bell County and Highlands. You have to respect the fact that the Colonels are doing their best to take it to the next level by taking on some very respected programs. They will get much more out of playing the new additions to the schedule than some other altenatives.

I think it is great that the Colonels are playing the challenging schedule, it will give an opportunity for them to showcase some of the great lineman that they have returning. Yes the Colonels graduated some excellant football players but Coach Black is grooming the younger Colonels to take up the challenge and move forward.

From what I understand its left up to each school's site based council on the decision of eligibilty of their middle school athletes. Each school in the state has their own policy. The only stipulation in the KHSAA rules is that if a student is held back in the middle school then they are not allowed to participate in any high school sport wheither that maybe fresh., jv. or varsity in that hold back year. You can check KHSAA website under the most frequently asked guestions-it will clear up this guestion more than I can. The key word is after if a student is promoted to the 9th grade then you can't hold him back, but if he is not promoted onto high school then he would be eligible based on the school's site based policy. Also, as long as the kid does not turn 19 before August 1 of his senior year he will not loose eligibility his senior year.

Does this mean he has to fail the 8th grade?

I'm really hoping that the repeat of the 8th grade is for academic reasons, as opposed to football.

Whitley is known for holding back football players in middle school. I don't blame them for it, I am sure everyone across the state would do so if they were allowed.

I don't believe this would be the case. As a parent, there is no way in the world that I would allow my son to be held back just to gain another year of high school football eligibility. If there was an academic issue, and staying back a year was the teacher's recommendation, then OK. It just doesn't make sense in the long run. What if the student is held back in middle school just to get another year of eligibility, and then during his freshman year sustains a career-ending injury?

Guess his career would be over, same as it would be if he were not held back.

Holding back is common practice at many schools.

Agreed. But once the football career is over, he would have to wait an additional year to graduate high school and move on to whatever next chapter in life awaits.

My issue is that we are talking about Student Athletes, not the other way around. If a student is held back for academic reasons and still gets 4 years of high school eligibility, then the student part of the equation gets the priority. If held back for athletics, then I don't agree with the practice. But, last time I checked, there were a whole lot of people who didn't see eye to eye with my opinions, so I'll just add this one to the list!
