Don't know if that's the case in this situation, but I do know that it (held back in middle school for athletic reasons) happens way too often in this state. Very sad and disappointing in my opinion. It's a shame some parents don't put as much emphasis on their kids getting ahead academically as they do athletically; although when I've seen it happen and got to know the parents involved, I'm no longer surprised. What disappoints me is that some school administrators go along with it because a parent does not have a right to hold a kid back; the principal has to approve it. I've seen instances where a kid was doing fine academically in school and had no maturity or adjustment issues, but was allowed by the principal to repeat the 8th grade for no good reason. Sorry to get off topic. This is just a hot button issue in Ky athletics for me.

 

If people would worry half as much about raising their own kids as they do worrying about what other parents are doing - then we'd be a lot better off.

 

To be brutally honest, it's not anyone's business but the family's concerning a decision to hold back. Perhaps the family feels maturity is an issue even if an outsider doesn't. Perhaps making A' and B's isn't good enough for the parents and they want their child to be better prepared. And perhaps it is for athletic reasons. Maybe the child has a chance to play college and get some scholly money. Or maybe the child just gets a better chance to excel in high school. Either way, it is of no business to self rightious know it alls that always know whats better for someone elses child.

I held all 3 of my kids back 2 of them were girls and one with no sports aspirations after H.S. The maturity level in elemetary or middle school may not be the issue but when my kids go off to college and are basically on their own i want them to be as mature as possible. I was a very mature high school student who was not near mature enough to go off to college at the age of 18. I lasted one semester and then decided to serve my country in the U.S. marine Corps (which was the smartest thing I have ever done). my point is, sending kids to college at the age of 17 is rediculous IMO we have a kid that just turned 16 and is a junior. No way will he be ready for college and I think letting a kid go to college that early is an injustice to the kid. I also agree that it is no ones business but each individual parents but I know everyone (including myself has an opinion). But you are wrong about one thing, a school can not stop a parent from retaining their child. If a parent wants their child to repeat a grade the school is obliged to comply. They can try everything to discourage the parent but in the end it is the parents decision!

I think that one team was ranked Bell Co. I also believe Letcher Central was ranked top 10.Not sure about Rockcastle. Middlesboro might have been ranked also.
