I would also add that the turn around and the making of school history with the best season at wchs is a good reason to get a ring.

 

I totally agree with you. Whitley had a great team and a great season last year. If they wanted to get rings to celebrate their accomplishments, great for them. :thumb:

Let's get back on the subject. What does the colonels have coming back next year. Loosing nine seniors will be hard to replace.

Or as the late great Keith Whitley said in his song, you say it best when you say nothing at all. This kid is going to be special, I have seen him play.

It is a nice silver ring, which has "Band of Brothers" on it which means alot to all the players, it has the record, and a black stone with a silver "W". It represents alot to the kids who went from 2-9 to 12-2. That team was a true brotherhood. That ring is just as important to the players at Whitley as the rings at Bell.

 

Although not a state champion ring, it does not have to be, the ring represents the blood sweat and tears that it took get to a championship level. It also represents and comemorates a true Band of Brothers, a group a players who were willing to sacrifice themselves for their team...........

Yeah I think is safe to say that to each player that wears that ring thinks it is pretty daggum important.

Just to add my two cents: I don't see a problem with any program doing something special to commemorate a special team or a special group of players, no matter if it's a ring, a hat, a shirt, or what ever. I also think that automatically comparing it to a "State Championship Ring" is short sighted. It wasn't meant to take the place of a State Championship Ring, it was only to mark a great accomplishment.

 

I have read that Bear Byant, given all rings that he had earned, only wore the one that was given to the players that survived "Junction". It was not a Championship Ring, but it was more important to him then the Championship Rings that he owned. Beauty, and value, are in the eyes of the beholder.

Sad for rewarding the kids for the first regional championship in school history? Sad for the kids getting a keepsake for a HUGE turnaround? I personally think it's a great idea and commend Whitley for doing this for the kids. These kids had been kicked around for a few years and they finally had a real breakthrough year, and it is sad?

 

I am not of the mindset of 'give everyone a trophy for participating', especially at the high school level. But this was a big deal for these kids and the program.

I am sure that the rings have been a motivating factor for the up coming team. Silver is certainly nice, but a gold one with CHAMPION on it would also be nice and the team has redoubled their efforts in the weight room. Will the Colonels have the type of season (almost magical) that they had last year, that remains to be seen but they will be busting their tailends to take it to the next level.

 

I was never much of a Bear Bryant fan, but with the above post about the "Junction Boys" ring, I am now a fan. No doubt about it, he like many other of our posters "got it"

People sometimes get too hung up on winning state. Seriously. Is it important to accomplish lofty goals? Sure it is. But when a school determines that a group of kids and coaches did everything they could, worked as hard as they could, was committed as they could be, and while they didn't accomplish the ultimate goal, they accomplished goals that no one at the school had previously accomplished, I think the school should reward and honor those kids and coaches in any way that the school thinks is appropriate. How does that old saying go: aim for the highest star. If you don't quite make it, you'll still be higher up than people that were only aiming for the moon.

What would a regional championship ring mean? 24 other teams in the state won region. talk about watered down. State championship rings mean something, no one else is left standing. Regional chanpionship rings are meaningless.:laugh: By the way my favorite team made it to the FINAL 2 years ago. There was no talk of rings, only celebration of the accomplishment and knowing we let one get away.

 

 

Not to these kids. These 15-18 year old kids deserve better than someone dumping on them telling them that what they accomplished is meaningless. To them, it is very meaningful, as it should be.
