Just for WONDERs.....who hates Duke?

Featured Replies

I don't like ANY team but UK. But Duke is like most teams...I could pretty much care less what happens to them.

RP please excuse me to expand on your thread?? This post makes me want to ask this question?? Why? Why is it that some people are incapable of liking other teams? How is it that some people can have a true hate/dislike of another team? I can see not liking a coach, player, etc. The other makes no sense to me.

This is probably a good question for RP since he is a self admitted hater of UK.

I really don't know how someone can hate all teams but one. I am a fan of UK and Louisville with UK being my number one choice. I am not a fan of UNC, but I can't say that I hate them. I used to dislike UC, but that was because I did not care for Huggins. Now I find myself rooting for them at times.

Hate is a very strong word and I choose to use it very lightly.:D

It's pretty easy really. Some years I find teams that I really like to watch play. But I don't ever really wish them to have much success. And I don't really hate other programs...it is as simple as not caring.

Ex: Texas during Durant. I loved to watch them play, I know a lot of their fans, and they annoyed me...so I didn't really want them to be good. And if they did good...what reward as a fan do I get out of that. Because ultimately I'd rather see UK there. Maybe it just boils down that there isn't enough room for another team.

Or take the NFL for example...I doubt Jim Schue is actively rooting for other teams besides the Steelers or HB is rooting for any team besides the Giants. Why can't I do the same in College Sports?

But I'm not incapable of rooting for other teams. In MLB I LOVE the Florida Marlins, but since they play in the NL and almost exclusively play other NL teams I also actively root for the Yankees too. I just don't see another college that is worth it.

P.S. I was prepared to give U of L a chance when I moved here...but the fans ruined that quick.

Strong coach/team/tradition/home court/. Has my upmost respect. I like what Coach K did to Cawood. Will look at them hard for a final 8 team.

While I would say I agree with your statement, consider this:

On the new HBO Doc Battle for Tobacco Road, Christian Laettner says, "I enjoy that everyone from the other side hates me. If they don't, I'm not doing my job." Or words to that effect. He relished in the bad guy role and even used the word "hate" as a hope that other opponents and/or fans had for him.

This gave me a lot of respect for Coach K.

For the record, I used to like Duke a lot. Even when they tore my heart out at my first NCAA game in 1980 at Rupp.

I even had a friend of mine who went to the Final Four in '89 in Seattle bring me a Duke T-shirt. I wore it for years.

Even after the '92 loss I never felt hate towards Duke. I thought that was the greatest game I ever saw and felt proud to be KY fan because they left everything out there just as Duke had.

Somewhere in the late 90's and early 00's I started not liking them. (Still won't say I hate them) I think the arrogance factor got to me a lot. (I'm not alone, check out the HBO Documentary and hear Dukies mention that they had to be arrogant because of the UNC #'s inbalance in terms of fans.) When K wiped off the losses in his absence, when K began to really berate officials (it worked well in the Maryland Final Four game), and when it seemed that every year Duke was perennial favorite but would fall woefully short alot of the times of even the Elite 8. Those were the times and reasons I grew to dislike them.

That's all. "It's strictly business, nothing personal." :thumb:

I respect, but dislike Duke. I actually liked them until 3 instances changed my mind.

1. Coach K complaining about having to play in Lexington (whereas they normally played in their homestate every year in the NCAA tourney), cannot remember the year

2. The 'stomp'

3. The 'shot'

However, that being said, I respect the tradition at Duke and recognize that Coach K is one of the best collegiate coaches in history. Love him or hate him, he is a great coach. I really had a great deal of respect for him after the 'shot' when he went over to Cawood and made those very classy comments. Still, the greatest game I have ever seen at the college level.

The story on Nolan Smith was very touching and shows the other side that we all too often don't see.

He really complained in '98 about having to play in Rupp in the first 2 rounds. I think he hinted at complaining the year they were upset by IU in the Sweet 16.

I have disliked Duke since Laettner was around a sophomore. They did a story on him on ESPN and he came across as very arrogant and he displayed that type of behavior on the court. They seem to attract kids with that type of attitude to Duke. Some of the media's(Patrick & Vitale quickly come to mind) fawning over Coach K and Duke is another reason that I have a bias against Duke.

I!!!

I hate them, ever since Laetner hit that shot. Before then I could've cared less and honestly I would not have hated them as much had he missed. I respect Coach K, hate the University.

I love this thread. I hate Duke. Even though Coach K is a great coach, never said I was a fan just admired his coachability.
