Depends on what school you attend. :thumb: If a kid is a real competitor then 5th or 6th is the exact same thing as 2nd. Some schools would be happy with 2nd but at HHS I think nothing less than 1st is acceptable. It doesnt really matter imo in the 9th. Holmes will repeat as region champs if not repeat as State Champs, but if a coach wants to win a region and make an appearance in the Sweet 16 then he has a better shot in the 10th than the 9th and therefore his best current position is to stay out of the 9th for the time being.

No my point is the 10th is probably the strongest overall with solid contenders down the list and any of those teams can win their region on any given night and one could probably make a case for the 9th provided Holmes wasnt in that region. Look, lets face it, for the next couple of yrs, I dont care what you do in the 9th, unless Kenny Shields come out of retirement and returns to HHS and brings with him about a half dozen or so Covington kids with him nobody is going to beat Holmes period. So, my friend, at the end of the day one would have a better chance in getting out of the 10th than they could out of the 9th at least for the next few yrs.

Interesting comment about the 6th grade basketball program. I guarantee football would never want them to "skip a year". I have seen all the elementary teams playing from Ft. Thomas.......Why would anyone want to skip a year of putting these kids together.......

Where have you seen all the elementary teams from Ft. Thomas playing? How would you suggest putting these kids together? I will agree with your statement that the football program surely would not sign off on skipping years.

I believe (and I could be wrong) there were two Johnson teams in the Dayton league and I thought I saw a Moyer team at one time at Newport maybe. I just find it preposterous to skip 6th grade basketball.

They need a junior program in Ft. Thomas at least a 6th grade basketball team in the middle school. I am all for putting kids together. In my opinion it is ridiculous that a 6th grade team is not offered. I know a few individuals are stepping forward in building interest. I am glad to see that Highlands baseball is on track with the possible addition of a freshman team. We have some athletes that want options, kids do not need to make a choice about sports in the middle school. Let the kids play them all and have fun. A few years back some of best football players could play other sports. I know the day and age has changed but we are not building a program; especially in basketball. What is offered at a young age in Fort Thomas in the public school system is poor.

Only the head coach will be able to rectify the situation. He has to be involved in the middle and grade school programs!

They have done this in Walton Verona and their school teams can be competitive with some average AAU teams that are put together from a few counties. Fort Thomas have some boys in the 4th and 5th grade that have some height and really enjoy playing basketball and would like to play at the middle school level instead of fighting for a position or two and playing time on the 7th grade bench. A year off and their interests changes and thus creates uneven classes at high school.

Been an issue for years now. You'll be amazed by the excuses and stonewalling you will encounter with the admin amd site based council. Good luck..

I can only speak for my boy but most of them already play AAU ball in Florence with kids from other schools. It still doesn't justify why HMS is one of the few middle schools without a 6th grade team and plenty of boys that have an interest.

First of all there are numerous kids already playing AAU basketball and have been for the last 3 or 4 years so that is not an issue. The wheels are already in motion to attempt to get 6th grade basketball at Highlands Middle School next year for both boys and girls basketball. I can also tell you that coaches are not really the main issue here and that there are some hurdles to overcome, but the person taking this on is not going to go away without a fight.

He plays AAU..He has for three years. We are talking about a school team.:irked:
