Get other students involved at activities during the game...cheerleading, dance team, step team, half time contests. Allow them in for a discount if a student wearing school colors.

You will notice though that during the game, the boys never let the girls sit in their section, and if one poor girl did try, she would be told to leave, as girls can't cheer!

 

At CovCath I think a lot of it is Coach L and back in my day Mote. Coach L and Mote would go through the school and talk up the games to the students body, telling them how important it was to have the students there cheering the players on and more importantly the next day thanking the kids for showing up and cheering. Even before the first game is played during the Blue and White scrimmage the seniors are teaching the "first year seniors in training" (freshmen everywhere else) how to cheer. It has been a long and fun tradition at CovCath, that is the Student Cheering section....

 

That's exactly what Coach Ken Shields did at Highlands. You better believe that it makes a HUGE difference!

I think that the Dixie and St. Henry student sections were very good Friday night. There were some very funny cheers back and forth (Hail Mary by the St. Henry student section followed by a "God's on our side" cheer by the Dixie student section). There was one inappropriate cheer from Dixie and I noticed that a female teacher from Dixie put an end to it right away.

I made it to the LexCath/Tates Creek game. Tates Creek had 1 of the best student sections I have seen. Clark Co. has had some good stuent sections when I have seen them. So does Scott Co, Mason Co, and CovCath.

I have to say I think that GRC have a pretty good base of student support especially when they play at home. Considering that GRC played alot of game at a long distant it is hard for them to make that trip during the week. But all in all they are very supportive.:dancingpa

In the 14th region Hazard has the best student section. They come ready for the games it don't matter if it is a home game or an away game. They even dress up for the game to make fun of the other team. If there was an award for the best student section in the 14th region hazard would get it hands down.

I just made this comment the other night to FF. We were watching the high school sports segment on the news and I noticed the stands were pretty much empty at most of the schools. My sister is on the dance team at Ryle and we go to watch her but we go to watch the game as well. I am always commenting on the turn out/lack there of. I think they should lower the price. I know they need to make money but they have a concession stand. At least let the students in free. My bother-in-law went to Beechwood, and I have to say they have a great turn out most of the time.

I was at Male-Ballard this season. It was a B/G double, on a friday night, and it was homecoming. Maybe ONE couple in The homecoming court was dressed up. I asked what was going on, and was told that the dance, etc was cancelled because they only sold 20 tix. It was opening night for Friday the 13th, and all the kids were going to the movies after the game! lol.

 

This was at Ballard. They did have a decent crowd for the game, however.

PS. Their video board is awesome.

Basketball homecoming is almost non-existant at Ballard. Football homecoming is the formal one. I never once attended a basketball homecoming dance (no one did), but I am surprised that they cancelled it, especially because I never remember them selling tickets to it either.

 

Was at Ballard vs. Scott County this year though and BHS had a better student section than SC on a school night 1 hour away.

I'd say that the district championship game could have lower attendance because the kids are strapped for cash, the game costs more than a usual game, and they know that their team will go to the region anyway. Now, the next regional games will have better attendance. It could be their last game. Just my observation.

Franklin County always has a strong student section. I was able to attend the Scott County game in Frankfort and IMO they got into some of there players heads and helped the Flyers put on a run or two. They also got into CJ Penny's head when he came to town... even though he did have 29 points. You can't mess his game up no matter what you say.

Very good point. In defense of some spirited Holmes students, they are having to decide to spend their money on districts, regionals, or state....in the event all goes well. I know many did not attend the districts, and I know of a few that are attending the game Sunday and Tuesday, but definitely intend to go to Lexington if Holmes is there.

 

Money is a big issue, for some students anyway. But there are still many that just come to the games to socialize, if they come at all.

Someone said Harrison Co's student section looked like the days of old in "The Stable" Friday night. Can anyone confirm?

 

It was good the entire week for both boys and girls. Each night they had a different theme.
