Who thinks Elliott County's run at state is legit?

Featured Replies

Most people would agree with you but there are several other teams that can't be ruled out!

I agree....but assuming they both make it, it's going to be awfully hard to knock either off. Scott Co's seniors have already tasted one championship on top of having the motivation to get revenge for their only loss to a KY team (Holmes).

Holmes senior class would be making their 3rd straight trip to Rupp and have a bad taste in their mouth from coming up short two years in a row, losing in the semi's their soph year and finals their junior year.

Anything can happen, but people can't deny that those two are probably the favorites heading in, as long as both make it out of the district and region tourneys.

After those two, I'd put Elliott or Shelby Valley as the next heavy favorite to cut down the nets. :thumb:

Well, if we can't have Elliott County as the cinderella team what are your thoughts on Corbin? Or how about a Elliott County vs Corbin final? Hey, with a little luck anything is possible!

If Corbin wins the 13th and can get past its first game, then the Hounds could play on Saturday.

I don't see Elliott reaching the finals, but that's JMO.:thumb:

I will have to agree with that! Corbin may be the 2009 sweet sixteen sleeper.:D

Advancing out of the lower bracket is going to be a real challenge. Games will be more physical and draining. I look for the state champ to come out of the upper bracket.

Would love to see Elliott Co wear that glass slipper.

I think Elliott has a nice team, but in the state tournament bench play will be a factor. To win you are playing 4 games pretty much back to back, including the semi-finals and finals on the same day. That is tough to do. I don't think they will be the favorites, but anything can happen. They are a scary matchup because if they're hot it's tough to keep them under 100 points. I wouldn't bet on them to win the whole thing, but it could possibly happen.

Who's your pick to come out of the 13th and who is some of that team's top players? South, Central and Clay have a shot and Whitley could make a run to the finals if they can beat South in the first round of the 50th District Tourney.

On a side note, Like I said before, the nice little story with Elliott will probably be about a game or two short of the state finals. :thumb:

I prefer to take them one at a time. East Carter is the mountain standing in the way of any further hopes or dreams. East is the one team over the last three years (in the 16th region) that has beaten them or played them really close. District is at East. Concentrate on the 25 meter target and not the 300 meter target.

Try this thread again on March 17th when we know who the 16 teams are. We could all be shocked at who makes up the field.

I would say Corbin 's story will be a couple games short of the 13th region title!:thumb:

South Laurel is my pick!!!! Matt St John, Zak Smith, Matt Gilbert!!! If I can help you with anything else let me know!!!!!!!!!!:thumb:

I think their lack of depth will be a factor and they've not had much success when it comes to winning the big games in the big tournaments (All A and Sweet 16).

I, for one, believe that if Elliott County continues to have good shooting nights and T. Knipp continues to play with passion they have a good chance at making it to the finals.

Timmy is a great player, but I have seen many games were he plays lazy. I guess part of that is because he doesn't have to play hard to win against 16th region teams but if they go to the state again and have a legit shot at winning he will have to step up, which i beleive he will.

I think he will step up too. His inconsistencies are due in large part to being a sophomore. He also defers alot to the older kids which he probably should. He just needs to pick his spots like he did against Ballard and he will be fine. I think too many people expect him to play like a senior. Youth will be inconsistent, thats just the way it is.

My memory escapes me. What present seniors were on the Bulldog's team in 2007 at Rupp and how much playing time did they get? These Elliott boys started as sophomores and have the most experience playing in the Sweet 16 than any team coming to the dance. No doubt, the Bulldogs are hungry, but as far as experinece and hunger goes, the Lions have an edge there on both Holmes and Scott Co. Whether that translates to them winning the Sweet 16 is still to be seen, but they certainly don't need to take a back seat to any team they will face as they charge on.

Current seniors for Holmes that were on that team in 06/07 and 07/08 as sophs and juniors are Riley, D. Johnson, and Rice. Riley played probably 5 mpg as a soph and right around 12 mpg as a junior. He was a key piece to the puzzle during Holmes region championship run last year and was the primary pg last year during the state tournament, with Avery moving over to the 2 a lot, so Holmes could have a shooter on the floor..

You've gotta be kidding me though, saying EC has more experience than either Scott Co or Holmes. Both senior classes have made an appearance in the state championship and have played in more sweet 16 games in ONE YEAR, than EC has in both of their trips. If anything, Holmes has more hunger for the simple fact that they've "been there, done that" and came up short in the state title game, and Scott County seniors should be hungry for another championship. Let's not forget that Holmes returns 3 starters from last year's state championship game, and Phares was a key member of that 07 state title team for SC. I'd say they both have ALOT of experience. I don't think some realize how much playing in the state championship drives a team to get back the following year.

I believe the EC boys have the desire and hunger to get there, but let's not overexaggerate and say they have more hunger and experience than any other team, cause that's simply not true.

Some of the SC players have experience (and with some success) against Elliott Co. from years past. That could count for something too.
