colonel-fan Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 CovCath hires new football coach Covington Catholic has hired Dave Wirth as its seventh head football coach in school history today. CovCath principal Bob Rowe confirmed the move this morning. Wirth, who previously spent five seasons as the head coach at Hamilton Badin, returns to the school where he spent three seasons with the Colonels under Lynn Ray, the program’s all-time winningest coach. He takes over for Dave Brossart, who resigned in January after going 10-14 in two seasons. Wirth, 33, went 27-25 at Badin, winning Greater Catholic League Central titles in 2006 and 2008. He graduated from Moeller in 1993 and began coaching at his alma mater two years later. He spent six seasons with the Crusaders before coming to CovCath for the first time. He served as the Colonels’ defensive coordinator in 2003.
Bluesport Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 This was Coach Ray's original choice 4 years ago. He is definitely in it for the long haul, and I think he will do a great job.
sidelinedoc Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Congratulations to CovCath and to Coach Wirth! CovCath is back to what they wanted 4 years ago!!!!!!!:thumb:
jbwill2 Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Question: Will Wirth bring in a lot of new assistant coaches, or will several current CCH assistant coaches stay on? Also, who is currently running CCH's off-season football conditioning program? I thought I heard it was Lynn Ray. If so, will he stay on in some capacity? It sounds like Wirth is a good pick.
Leonidas Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 If Coach Ray wanted him I am sure he is a class act! Good luck to Coach Wirth and the CCH program.
Clyde Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Press Release Park Hills, KY – Dave Wirth, former Covington Catholic High School teacher and football assistant coach has been named the new head football coach at Covington Catholic High School. Most recently, Dave Wirth was the head coach at Hamilton Badin High School, where he led the Rams to two GCL titles over the past three seasons, returning the Rams to the OHSAA playoffs for the first time since 2001. Former CCH Head Football Coach Lynn Ray had this to say about the new head football coach, “Dave was a great addition to our staff. He proved to be a bright, dedicated, energetic assistant. I knew that it was only a matter of time before he would become a successful head coach.” “Dave Wirth is an outstanding educator in the classroom as well as on the field. More importantly, Dave incorporates his faith into his teaching and coaching. Dave possesses the necessary passion for teaching and coaching that will bring energy and enthusiasm to the Covington Catholic Community. We wish Coach Wirth the best of luck and much success in his new endeavor as our head football coach,” said Principal Bob Rowe “Dave is a very innovative and energetic coach. His personal coaching experience has prepared him well for this position. He understands what Covington Catholic is about, and through his leadership will continue the rich tradition of Covington Catholic football,” commented Athletic Director Mike Guidugli Dave earned a liberal arts degree with a minor in Religion from Xavier University. He returned to his alma mater, Archbishop Moeller H.S. where he coached under Steve Klonne from 1995 through 2000. From 2001 through 2003 he was part of Coach Lynn Ray's staff at Covington Catholic where he served as Varsity Defensive Coordinator, while also teaching religion. In 2004, he became the head football coach at Hamilton Badin High School. Covington Catholic High School was established in 1925. It is the only all male school in Northern Kentucky, and it was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a 2007 Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.
NineOh Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Wirth should have been there ever since Coach Ray left. I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see a coach at CCH who isn't using it as a stepping stone (Rodenberg) or is in over his head (Brossart). My guess is that Wirth will bring some assistants from Badin (where despite around a .500 record, he did a great job from what it looks like). Also, I would love to see him get Coach Ray to come on board in some capacity.
Theoldguy Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Thanks to Principal Rowe..... Good luck Coach Wirth
Shutitdown Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 What does the Park Hills Mafia think of this hire?
Freebird23 Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Congrats to the Covington Catholic faithful! Sounds like a quality coach, and more importantly, a great educator of our youth... looking forward to the days of a competitive rivalry with the Birds. Let the games begin... Brossart staying on or pack'n the bags?
Ice Cold Vengeance Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 What type of offensive and defensive style can we expect to see from Coach Wirth?
footballhd Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 .500 record seems like a great job to me. Tell that many other coaches around the state.
colonel-fan Posted February 19, 2009 Author Posted February 19, 2009 From the Hamilton Journal-News: Badin football coach takes job at Cov Cath HAMILTON — Badin High School football coach Dave Wirth resigned today, Feb. 18, to take the head coaching position at Covington (Ky.) Catholic. Wirth told his players Wednesday morning. "I knew this would be a tough day, talking to the players and such, but it's been much tougher than I thought," Wirth said in a statement. "I have really enjoyed my five years at Badin High School. It will always have a fond place in my heart." Wirth was an assistant coach at Covington Catholic when Badin hired him in 2004 following the retirement of Terry Malone, Ohio's all-time winningest coach. Wirth went 27-25 in five years at Badin, including 8-4 this season when he led the Rams to their first playoff victory since 2001.
born2reign Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Good luck to Coach Wirth. Kentucky football is better when Cov Cath is winning and I hope he can bring the tradition back to CCH football.
