Birds trailed most of 2nd half by 6 and then tied with 21 seconds and they had the ball.

 

They just turned it over. Tie ballgame and Twenhofel has it. dont have a score though.

Birds battled in this one especially against a deep Twenhofel team on their home floor. Its too bad Witte who has been hot lately and scored in double digits 2 of the last 4 games was out sick tonight. Still a great effort by the Birds. I will try to get more details and a final score.

Monson and Ayers ran a high pick and roll, with Monson's player falling down on the screen leaving Cody a lane for a one handed floater to win the game as time expired.

 

A win is a win but Twenhofel must play better.

Birds played their best game of the year in a very physical battle with a very deep team that used 11 players. Birds counted on 5 starters and missing their 6th man was major. Birds had ball with 40 sec left and ran it down to 20 sec and called TO. Birds then lost the ball with 6 sec left. Twenhofel called TO and set up a play where the kid hits a RUNNER at the elbow with a hand in his face. Birds won the battle on the boards tonight unofficially. McCoy/Christian/Collinsworth had great games there. Collinsworth played possessed and had double digits.

 

If the Birds would have brought that intensity all year they would have won 25+ games. Great season either way they finish 21-14.

Refs were bad the entire night I heard. Was it a difference maker, I doubt it as the Birds wouldnt have pulled away. They called a ticky tacky over the back on a missed FT by a Bird after they went up 2 with 40 seconds left to put the Breds on the line at the other end. That is weak especially after the young ref didnt blow the whistle all night against the home Breds.

 

At one point it was 7 fouls against Birds and 1 against Twenhofel.

Come on coach, are you kidding? Highlands had to rely on 5 kids tonight, Witte their 6th man and spot starter was out. If you noticed the Breds made their big runs when the Birds had to sub. First a 7-0 run in the 1st half and in the 2nd half the Birds were up by 3 and the Breds proceeded to go on a run when the Birds subbed.

Yep, sometimes the home team can get all the breaks... I always tell any players that I'm involved with, to make every attempt to put the game away and you'll never have to worry about the refs.

The guys I talked to didnt use it as an excuse by any means but Twenhofel had a lot on their side tonight. The coach made a great move switching to a zone after the Bird timeout and that confused the Birds who turned it over. Setting up the runner was a nice call but you need a little luck for that ball to drop in that situation with a guys hand in your face. Congrats to the young man for hitting it.

I'm glad someone else thought the refs were bad tonight. Newport played a hard game tonight but fell short to a talented Beechwood team. Number 10 for Beechwood was the strength of the team. He goes hard to the basket and handles the ball great. Newport stayed with Beechwood and IMO had improved a lot as the season went on. But the refs were bad - at one point it was 7 Newport fouls to Beechwood's 1 - I saw a lot of pushing off by Beechwood and it took awhile before the refs called it. Good job Newport and good luck in high school. Beechwood good job tonight and good luck with the rest of the tournament.
