Can I get a concrete answer on how much schools got from the 9th in previous years compared to what they will under this new deal. We've seen the numbers from the 10th...

 

Maybe you haven't noticed but gyms at High School basketball games in the 9th region are not exactly full or even half full. Their "fans" are alienated themselves. I would like to see those "fans" support their teams by cheering in person. Sitting by the radio/computer just doesn't get it for High School sports. That is not what it is about.

You don't understand the fan interest and mentality if you truly believe that an internet broadcast would keep "a large percentage of the crowd" from showing up. If you're a fan an internet broadcast or a radio broadcast simply doesn't cut it. You show up. The only ones effected by this are the ones who CANNOT or WOULD NOT be there anyway.

 

Precisely. And it's the ones who CANNOT that I feel for.

If only it was monetary. It's not. And I can guarantee that for all of us in the media upset about this...

You might make a valid point there, but it is one I haven't noticed in the games I've called this year. The economy has people cutting back, but I still see plenty out watching games.

 

We don't do games live, so that's not an impact. Insight hasn't done a game all season. How many have KR sports done? I honestly don't know. Do you?

 

Media coverage isn't what is keeping people away. Without it, you can count on this site having the best updates out there. Should they be able to charge Guru for the people in the stands texting their member friends because it is the only option like so many other NKY threads on here?

IMO.........Self-serving..........no.

 

Last year at Conner, we were litterally squeezed in like sardines. The CovCath internet Radio guys were working on a table in a doorway. Ryan was squeezed at the scorers table, I was tucked away under the cov Cath student section of the bleachers. When the announcement was made that the BOKC was going to take the tournament, I became one of the biggest supporters. I have had the folks from the arena on my weekly show 4 times to promote it. After broadcasting games from the BOKC for the Bluegrass/Buckeye Classic at Christmas, I became that much more of a supporter actually calling games in the BOKC. It's a great atmosphere, the staff were great and everything was fine. Now this.

 

Our broadcasts are not keeping one person away from the gate. Not one. To be honest, I could care less if we did it live, although it is our goal. We were going to do the whole tournament, boys and girls. Are we doing that for cash............no. All of my sponsors were paid to the former radio station we were with for football. I see $0.00 from it. We do it for the folks that can't make it to the games, and for the kids who may be playing in the games after it is over. The numbers of hits we have on our archived broadcasts prove that out. Believe me, my family would rather have me at home than broadcasting a game that I see no cash for at all. Self-serving..........no.

 

I have since taken all of the links and banners off my site for the arena. Hopefully, the folks associated with the Bluegrass/Buckeye Classic have seen this as well and will choose a new venue for that tournament next year. I won't step foot in the arena after being mislead like this.

 

As I said in the story Ryan wrote for the paper, I'll head south to New Castle and the 8th Region. As GatorFan said, "Will never happen in 8th Region. That is the longest running facility to hold the tourney. High school basketball at its best in a high school atmosphere!" Anyone else want to come??? Some good ball down there too!!!:thumb: Colonel, save a seat for me!!!

Bottom line ... some people can't make every game for whatever reason. Some have to work or stay home with the kids.

 

As for myself, I enjoyed immensely the opportunity to listen to the 10th Region finals on the internet two years ago, when Preston Knowles led Clark County to a win over Mason County at the fieldhouse. I'm sure I wasn't the only BGPite that was tuning in on that Sunday afternoon.

 

For all the revenue the BOK Center management may be "maximizing," they are losing many times that in public relations and goodwill.

Well said and I agree 1000%. I hope the BOK can book a lot of high draw entertainment acts in the future. As a sports venue, the ball has been dropped...

I may alienate myself by doing this, but this is the response from the 9th Region Representative Chad Molley on the e-mail I sent to him and Superintendent Strong this afternoon:

 

"All of the broadcasts that were done in the past were in an effort to bring the games to people who may not have been able to see them in person because of the limited seating in our gyms. That is no longer part of the equation now that we are playing in a 10,000 seat arena. In order for this to work the Bank of Kentucky Center has to generate enough money through ticket sales to cover the guarantee with the 9th Region. We have never felt it was unreasonable for them to hold the broadcast rights to these games.

 

As 9th Region schools we want to encourage people to come to the arena and watch the games. We want to bring back that casual basketball fan that has stayed away for many years because they did not want to fight the long lines and crowds to maybe get in the gym. If we were to broadcast these games via TV, radio, or internet the casual fan may decide to stay home instead of coming to the arena. We have entered a three year partnership with The Bank of Kentucky Center and want to make this endeavor as successful as we can. This is the right thing to do financially for the schools in the 9th Region and for the scores of student-athletes that will get an opportunity to play a Regional tournament in this arena.

 

I am sorry that you will not be able to broadcast the games this year, but again, our decisions were influenced by what was best for our schools and the student-athletes that represent them."

 

I understand there was an athletic director meeting that was held this afternoon and this was brought up as one of the leading reasons for the meeting. Superintendent Strong has invited me to come to his office to discuss.

I am likely now going to be fully self serving by covering much better talent at the Ohio tournaments and missing an event that has been a major part of my life for 25+ years as a result of their mismanagement. Better pay, and better talent. Would have passed if given the chance...
