I'm guessing WFTM out of Maysville will be doing the entire 10th tourney now since they are outside the radius? If you can't get the station on your radio they also stream live online, so if you're a fan from the 10th you shouldn't be complaining because you'll still get to hear it. Now if they're only aloud to do Mason and St.Pat games then nevermind.

I really don't understand all the complaining. You have to remember, this is a large arena, not a high school gym. There are costs involved and they have to maximize their attenance figures. If they allowed internet broadcasts, a large percentage of the crowd would not bother to come -- especially to the early round games. BOK is no different than any other large sports venue that enforces a media blackout for financial reasons.

 

You don't understand the fan interest and mentality if you truly believe that an internet broadcast would keep "a large percentage of the crowd" from showing up. If you're a fan an internet broadcast or a radio broadcast simply doesn't cut it. You show up. The only ones effected by this are the ones who CANNOT or WOULD NOT be there anyway.

Based on a comment on Ernst's blog, they were planning on doing the entire 9th region tourney.

 

On the station out of Falmouth that no one can get? Great.

My radio station bought the sponsorship rights to a bowl game for $8,000.00 and asked visiting radio stations to pay $100.00 for a license to broadcast the games.

 

They cried so much that I let them broadcast it for free.

 

A Louisville high school once made me pay to broadcast a playoff game on the radio. I didn't cry about it but I did send them the following letter:

 

Dear Mr. XXXX:

 

First, I would like to thank you for your assistance during our broadcast coverage of the XXXXXX-Lincoln County football game. Second, I would like to provide you with some information which may be useful to you as a member of the KHSAA Board of Control.

 

When I told you that the $200 being charged for rights fees to cover the XXXXX-Lincoln County game was more than the KHSAA charges for the State Championship game, you told me that the Championship game fee was too low and that as a member of the Board of Control you were going to see that the fee was increased. I am not advocating no fees, just reasonable fees.

 

Any fees charged to our station, or other rural community stations, is money that otherwise would be used to support the local teams. For example, this past year our radio station purchased 50 season tickets ($750.00), gave the coaches a donation to purchase cover-ups ($250.00) and placed an advertisement in the booster’s football program ($100.00). As such, we gave a total of $1,100.00 in cash to the football program. In addition, we gave an immeasurable amount of publicity to the many activities and fund raisers held by the boosters.

 

Our football broadcasts are as much a community service to our listeners as it is a money making venture on the part of the station. Additional or increased fees would only lessen our ability to serve the community and to help the fund raising efforts of the boosters and the team itself.

 

While the radio stations in the Louisville area are mostly highly profitable businesses owned by publically traded corporations, many stations, like ours, have thin profit margins and must closely watch every expenditure. Increased fees could, in some instances, cause stations to

forego coverage of championship or other games, which would mean decreased service to the communities they serve.

 

Please reconsider any increase in fees and keep in mind that the majority of the stations broadcasting Kentucky high school sporting events are small businesses which provide a valuable service to their communities, while struggling to make a profit.

The "fee" has magically disappeared and now it's a simple no so far. I have to guess this applies to us because they won't return any of our phone calls...

This is upsetting me, out of the 5 people I emailed and left voicemails for, no one has called me back, I requested a return call. I am not sure how many emails and phone calls hey got, but they need to start calling back at least a few peoples calls.

 

This isn't over! If we all keep flooding their email boxes and call them constantly, as well as those at NKU, perhaps the Cincy TV stations, it will be too much bad PR, I think they will change their minds.

 

Interesting that the arena has only been open less than 6 months and the head guy from the management company is already gone, and that they have messed up several things so far. I have asked several times if the people from the management company are from this area, I am guessing not.

Exactly! :thumb: The early round high school playoffs in Ohio when held at the Cintas gets nice crowds, and they also have radio and internet broadcasts.

From my understanding Ernst is writing a story on the issue for tomorrow's paper and they gave him the run around today and basically all he got was to read the press release...

This is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard in high school athletics. I'm sure the 10th Region tournament will never grace the BOK Center with its presence again.
