Ram Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 Teams and Score: Highlands 16 Bell County 14 Year: 1996 RS or PO: State Semi-Finals Location: Pine Mountain Details why this game should be the "Game of the Week": Highlands vs Bell County 1996 semi finals 3A at Pine Mountain. Highlands winning 16-14 with a 35 yard field goal with minute and half left. HHS had to kick a field goal after it was 4th and 1 and the tight end jumped to make it 4th and 6. Very hard fought game on both sides in sloppy conditions. Outside the hashes was mud up to your ankles. HHS outside running game was shut down. Always great games when Bell and HHS play.
Ram Posted January 31, 2009 Author Posted January 31, 2009 What made this game great? Who were some of the players that made a difference? What were the big plays of the game? Please be specific.
Ram Posted January 31, 2009 Author Posted January 31, 2009 If you have a nomination for the "Bluegrasspreps.com Game of the Week", please visit this link. You can nominate more then one game. Your nomination does not have to be a playoff or Championship game, just a great game that exemplifies Kentucky High School Football.
Commander 25 Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 This was a great game at Log Mtn. Highlands was ranked 23rd in the nation. Bell gave the Bluebirds all they wanted that night in a hard fought game that was decided in the closing minutes. I believe that it was the only field goal that he hit all season. Tough loss for Bell Co against Highlands wouldn't be the last.
Henry521 Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Was this the Damion Chuke field goal? I remember that it was a cold sleet/snow /rain night. Log Mountain was always interesting. In a way I miss those days, yet in a way I really don't. I would love to play Bell at Highlands in the regular season.
jbwill2 Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 This was but one of a few very interesting games between Highlands and Bell County over the years. I thought I heard that it was learned after this game that the Bell County-supplied chain gang was "stealing" play calls from the Highlands sideline and communicating them to the BC sideline during the game... is this true?

No that isn't true. But is was a very interesting game that was an instant classic.
jbwill2 Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 No that isn't true. But is was a very interesting game that was an instant classic. Was that a different HHS-BC game?
Fishhead Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 This was but one of a few very interesting games between Highlands and Bell County over the years. I thought I heard that it was learned after this game that the Bell County-supplied chain gang was "stealing" play calls from the Highlands sideline and communicating them to the BC sideline during the game... is this true? I remember the situation, but not the exact game. Leaving the game on this night was one of the more uncomfortable post-game walks I ever remember. People were bawling, and I completely understood why. Didn't make it any easier to see.
HHSX2 Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 As I recall Stephen Lickert, then a senior playing linebacker for the Bluebirds, stopped Bell's ball carrier 3 times in a row at the end of the game. Bell was driving very deep in Highlands territory (I think inside the 10 yard line) and a score would have resulted in a win for Bell County. These defensive plays forced a change of possession giving Highlands the ball and the rest is history. :thumb:

Don't know about the chain gang never heard that one, I would imagine that would be pretty hard to communicate anyway. I do however remember a CB for HHS standing on the Bell sideline next to Dudley listing to the play then calling it out to his teammates. Some of the players were the dueling RB's Fisk for HHS and Chaney for Bell.
tdyballgame Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 This will get laughable. Sorry but I remember this and we didn't do that or they did this is exactly why this series will always be memorable. I have one for you. When I won "split the pot" and went to collect my winnings with my blue and white on, I quickly got the other hand. Still took all $113 and a win back to Ft. Thomas. You would have thought that with a crowd of 10,000 plus there would have been more than $226. Another classic moment in the series for me.
NHS BIG DADDY Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 I thought I read an article a long time ago about this. Wasnt the guy who made the game winning FG sick that game?
THUNDERBIRDS Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 No that isn't true. But is was a very interesting game that was an instant classic. So why was the chain gang removed from Highlands sideline at Halftime. Something was going on. I do know for a fact that 2 former Highlands players visited the field earlier in the day and said for some reason there was a firetruck making laps around the field. That was strange...what would the fire department be driving a firetruck around the track on gameday.
