In the 4th quarter he still had in both of the Knipps brothers till late in the 4th. In the second quarter Knipps were out but Ferguson , and the Faulkners were in the game.

 

Coach Mays doesn't have a history of substituting alot. I just hope that this doesn't hurt him and the team in the post season.

Also some people around me were wondering why he would risk of getting a starter hurt, when the game was clearly won. Just some discussion that was going on during the game from non-partisan observers.

It's the All-A state tournament, not a regular season romp. There's only 8 teams left, yet there's dispute over playing time. And from the usual suspects. Really, it's getting old. Not a huge Elliott fan by any stretch, but at this point, I hope they win it all, and by a 90 pt margin in every contest. Seriously, the river if tears is at flood stage.

I love watching these Elliott Co boys.I know how special they are to all of Elliott and surrounding counties. My team has suffered ALOT of injuries this year.....don't want to see another teams dream taken away because of injuries.

If Rick Mayes was really greedy he would have broken the most points scored in a single game by one team in the All A State history which is 103 points by Lexington Catholic vs. Barbourville 103-49 which was the largest scoring margin (54). Elliott did break that by winning by 61 last night.

If Pineville doesn't play better than last night, they may get 100 laid on them in 3 quarters. Sounds like pride--it's not just facts. Then again it could be a barn burner but we must play bad and they must play a whole lot better than last night with only 37 points scored.

Then it will be a very very long 32 minutes, but I think that Pineville will pull it together and play better. Elliott County still wins by about 30.

I hope so to. Last year in the LexCath Christmas tourney EC beat up teams by large margins and didn't sub that much either, so when they went up against a team that was as good if not better than them, the EC players legs were shot. All you have to do is win by 1 not 61 to move on but in a tournament you have to remember that there are more games tomorrow, and you have to manage your starters time to be fresh or at least as fresh as possible when you play better teams later on in the tourney. Elliott had not played since Monday and had little practice due to the weather. He was probably trying to get his guys some conditioning, The storm has played havoc with practices as well as games.

And another thing. It occurs to me that some of the folks that complain about the playing time of the EC starters have something other than concern for their welfare in mind. Like another week where EC sits atop some poll, maybe?

Someone mentioned that the starters played the WHOLE third quarter. EC was up 44-7 at the half...why would Coach Mays play his starters that long with a 37 point lead? State tournament or not, there's no need to try and humiliate the opposing team. The game was well in hand at halftime. No reason for them to even play more than say 2 minutes of the third.

 

Everyone knows EC isn't very deep. Shouldn't coach Mays be trying to develop some depth rather than worrying about letting his players get their numbers?

 

It's games like this that you try to get ALL of your players better. Were the starters really progressing by being out there against a team that they had blown out by 37 in one half?
