Someone mentioned that the starters played the WHOLE third quarter. EC was up 44-7 at the half...why would Coach Mays play his starters that long with a 37 point lead? State tournament or not, there's no need to try and humiliate the opposing team. The game was well in hand at halftime. No reason for them to even play more than say 2 minutes of the third.

 

Everyone knows EC isn't very deep. Shouldn't coach Mays be trying to develop some depth rather than worrying about letting his players get their numbers?

Your constant analysis of the time the Elliott County players are in the game, is perplexing. If they played 20 min. in a 32 minute game, why is this an issue.

 

A coach develops talent in practice and he plays who he wants. I'm not certain but maybe these young men, who like all the other All A teams are excited about playing in the State. Perhaps the most important aspect of the game is not the minutes played.

It's games like this that you try to get ALL of your players better. Were the starters really progressing by being out there against a team that they had blown out by 37 in one half?

And in the event they win the championship at the All-A and play similar minutes and win by 100 you'll sing the same song. We get it already.:thumb:

That was no bad beating at all. In the 90's ,Jackson City beat Woodbridge Academy 215-28. Ed Lowdenback was coaching Jackson City at that time and wanted to set a new national scoring record. Mike Fields wrote about it in this week's Lex Herald.:dancingpa

I would have felt that in this game, clearly defined as a EC win after three periods, that perhaps he might have interspersed the aforementioned players along with Nickell, Morgan, and Flannery to allow a better match-up for the defeated Whitefield bunch, and provide those guys some meaningful experience in this "A" State tournament. To play those guys 1 minute (which might have been actually much less than a minute) seems kind of embarassing, or better yet - very insecure - on the part of Coach Mayes.

 

Who knows what other opportunities he will have to do this in the future. Just seems like it would have been a nicer, more classy, touch.

Elliott County won this game and Coach Mays played 14 players. To make the All A is testament of endless hours of practice and hard work. Congratulations to both Elliott County and Whitefield Academy. Best of luck the remainder of the season.

Elliott played very good defense and Whitefield was totally in shell shock after the first two minutes. Starters played 1st and 3rd quarters entirely. Other than that substitutions were liberal. Whitefield simply couldn't score even with Elliott in a very loose 2-3 zone in the second half.

 

Thank you, from reading the other post on this subject it certainly seems that everyone got playing time. I also have always said that a coach can do certain things to not run a score up (like not pressing when the game is not in doubt, substituting often, etc.) but imo a coach certainly cannot tell a kid to go out and not try or to not play hard.

Congrats to Elliot on the win. Now, go out an win,win,win it all and bring back a State All A Champioship to Sandy Hook and for the 16th Region. :ylsuper:
