formerkywrestler Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I hear Cats fans say it all the time about Cards fans. Do you think it exists? I'm just trying to see if Cards and Cats fans alike think that it exists. Or if it's just a heated rivalry. Plus, hopefully this thread will keep those kind of conversations right here. Because as long as it's remotely on subject...I could care less how wacky this one gets. I for one do. For example, look at the threads about tonights games. In the U of L threads, there aren't any UK posters saying anything about the Cards game. Why??? I'm going with they don't care! In the UK thread, you have U of L posters bringing up a controversial call in a game five years ago among other things. I've come to the conclusion that U of L fans have an chip on their shoulder when it comes to U of K fans. Disclaimer: This hypothesis mainly comes from sources other than BGP. So, do you think that Louisville fans have a "little brother complex" towards the UK program? What reasons do you have for the answer?
TheDeuce Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Well, first of all, concerning tonight's games, a UK fan brought UofL into the discussion... And the reason there are no UK fans in the UL thread? Louisville won, convincingly. They have nothing to say. :thumb:

Most of them exist outside of the internet. So, you don't think U of L fans as a majority have a chip on their shoulder regarding UK fans?

IMO there's no reason for UL fans to have a chip on their shoulder. Yeah, I know, seven championships. All but two of them came DECADES ago... The UL basketball program and it's fans have many things to be proud about, and therefore no need for a "chip."

Getslow Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I know I do. I grew up having to hear about Kentucky's basketball tradition. Now every time I hear the word "tradition" when someone talks about sports, I throw up a little bit. Tradition is best referenced with regard to Church or Christmas dinner at grandma's. We have far less money and far fewer fans, and yet Kentucky is our archrival, there's no doubt about it. Louisville was a small city-funded school until it joined the state system in 1970. We ARE little brother and we like to prove ourselves to our big brother. But I would be remiss if I didn't also add that UK fans are often guilty of similar big brother tendencies. It's tough to smell your own bias... but let's all take a big whiff.

I'll admit that UK fans can be arrogant, rub the tradition in, and constantly bring up all 7 championships ()!
HT721 Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I'm going to say UK fans want UL fans to have this syndrome, but they frankly don't. UL is one of the only schools to play in a BCS bowl, College World Series, and Final Four since the year 2000. UK hasn't done any of the three, so I think it's crazy to call UL the little brother.
ram2003 Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Some fans do, but I think it's safe to say most UofL fans don't. I actually hope UK does well when not playing UofL. And really, I think in order to have a little brother complex the stronger school has to be older. UK was founded in 1865. UofL was founded in 1798. It would be like saying St. X is Trinity's 'little brother' because T has more state championships.
cch5432 Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 It would be like saying St. X is Trinity's 'little brother' because T has more state championships. I'm from outside Louisville and not as familiar with the rivalry, but isn't that sort of the case? P.S. I am half-serious, and half-stirring-the-pot
bugatti Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Yes, but let me preface by saying I do not think it is a bad thing. Luckily my family and friend connections have allowed me to witness both fan bases up close and personal in settings outside of games. The best example I can give is in 2005. I loved that UL team primarily because of Myles and Dean. Anyways, after they were put in Nashville, I got some tickets for the game since it is not far from home. I went to UL's pep rally on Friday before their first game in Nasvhille. The music starts going, and the crowd erupts in to a chant about what? Not their opponent, but about UK losing the next night to Cincinnati. This was followed up with subsequent other chants rooting for the Bearcats. The theme of the pep rally was centered around UK sucking. You would have never knowng they (UL) had a game coming up in a couple of hours. I have been to 4 different pep rallys for UK ball games. Not once have I heard a chant rooting for UL to lose. Not because many UK fans do not want UL to lose, but because it is not as high of a priority as it is for their arch rival. Being from the state of Kentucky, I realize how UK fans can be and how the idea that the universe revolves around Rupp arena can be jammed down the throats of UL fans. That is what I feel has led to the "complex" or whatever you want to call it. UK dislikes UL because they are simply there and pose a threat to their supremacy within this state. I call this the "We must protect this house" complex. Even though the house being protected is made up of a multitude of fans that could care less about UK or their tradition. Overall, I think the bitterness from both schools is a good thing to keep the rivalry going.
cch5432 Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 UK fans will say yes because of their unbounded arrogance. UL fans will say no because little brother never admits his little brother complex. We need an unbiased observer (a non-fan of both teams and preferably someone from outside of Kentucky who has witnessed the rivalry over the years and interacted with both groups of fans) to give us the true answer.
