January 22, 200917 yr I think I see much more of a "Big Brother" complex from UK fans trying to put UL fans in their place than a "Little Brother" complex being exhibited. You want a Little Brother complex? You should mosey on down here to BG and hear how Hilltopper fans talk. Everything is in terms of how they're better than UK at this or UL at that, constantly talking down about both schools, noting how UK fans live in the past (in between their references to how great WKU was the 60's and 70's - "We went to a Final Four!"). I see none of that nonsense from Louisville.
January 22, 200917 yr Author Yes, but let me preface by saying I do not think it is a bad thing. Luckily my family and friend connections have allowed me to witness both fan bases up close and personal in settings outside of games. The best example I can give is in 2005. I loved that UL team primarily because of Myles and Dean. Anyways, after they were put in Nashville, I got some tickets for the game since it is not far from home. I went to UL's pep rally on Friday before their first game in Nasvhille. The music starts going, and the crowd erupts in to a chant about what? Not their opponent, but about UK losing the next night to Cincinnati. This was followed up with subsequent other chants rooting for the Bearcats. The theme of the pep rally was centered around UK sucking. You would have never knowng they (UL) had a game coming up in a couple of hours. I have been to 4 different pep rallys for UK ball games. Not once have I heard a chant rooting for UL to lose. Not because many UK fans do not want UL to lose, but because it is not as high of a priority as it is for their arch rival. Being from the state of Kentucky, I realize how UK fans can be and how the idea that the universe revolves around Rupp arena can be jammed down the throats of UL fans. That is what I feel has led to the "complex" or whatever you want to call it. UK dislikes UL because they are simply there and pose a threat to their supremacy within this state. I call this the "We must protect this house" complex. Even though the house being protected is made up of a multitude of fans that could care less about UK or their tradition. Overall, I think the bitterness from both schools is a good thing to keep the rivalry going. That is exactly what I'm talking about. I see it from U of L fans ALL the time now that I live in Louisville. When I was in Lexington you never saw that kind of thing from UK fans. I'm not saying they wouldn't...it just seems to me like they don't care.
January 22, 200917 yr Author UK fans will say yes because of their unbounded arrogance. UL fans will say no because little brother never admits his little brother complex. We need an unbiased observer (a non-fan of both teams and preferably someone from outside of Kentucky who has witnessed the rivalry over the years and interacted with both groups of fans) to give us the true answer. Bugatti seems to be pretty unbiased to me. :sssh:

I see none of that nonsense from Louisville. Really? Must be your group of friends or colleagues. I don't follow that aspect and neither does anyone else that I know from WKU. I'll be more then happy to give U of L or UK a good ribbing for beating them... But that's what bragging rights are all about. As far as the the original question goes... UK fans use the Big brother/Little brother mentality. Of course Louisville fans are going to say they don't because they are on the little brother end of it. Of course UK has more tradition and championships and such (7 Championships, 2 since 1995). Of course Louisville's arguement there is "well most of your championships are decades ago" even though UK still has 2 more recent than Louisville. I use the Big brother/Little brother arguement when it comes to Western Kentucky University and Eastern Kentucky University. Basically because WKU owns EKU.
January 22, 200917 yr Bugatti seems to be pretty unbiased to me. :sssh: I wonder why you think that... :idunno:
January 22, 200917 yr ...it just seems to me like they don't care. You're blind if you don't think UK fans care about Louisville losing. Either blind, or lying to yourself. Check out a game thread on here when UL wins, then check one out when they lose.

The funny thing about that is, BOTH of their championships were "decades" ago as well.
January 22, 200917 yr The funny thing about that is, BOTH of their championships were "decades" ago as well. Fair enough... But the championships are 2-2 since 1980, 3-2 UK since 1960. You're really gonna claim championships when your parents were toddlers?
January 22, 200917 yr As a UofL fan, I cheer for the Cats all the time. The issue I have is UK fans thinking UofL is Little brother. At one time I will admit UK was the big brother. But now I think things are level. These aren't your daddy's Cats or Cards. UofL Football has been to a BCS bowl. Yes struggling now but will fix the probelm soon. Basketball is a contender. Baseball is a contender. Women Basketball - building solid program UK Football 3 bowls and getting better Basketball - about 2 years from being a serious contender year in and year out Basball - solid Women basketball - building solid program

January 22, 200917 yr Or 2-0 since 1990. It just depends on how you look at it. 1 Final Four to zero since 2000.
January 22, 200917 yr Final Fours aren't championships... True, but it does mean we did better than you.
January 22, 200917 yr True, but it does mean we did better than you.   :thumb: I can't take any credit for UK's success being I'm a closet WKU fan.. :sssh: And for the record before anyone thinks I support 23423 teams... I'm a WKU fan first because it's my alumni and such. But I gotta root and defend UK as well just because I feel like it's my civic duty as a Kentuckian.
