Cacdawg
Didn't think that the score would be this low. Any stats? Edited January 15, 2009 by gold sunrise Rule #

bjim
Well at least other 9th region teams get to see the game played at a different level.

SportsFan62
Well at least other 9th region teams get to see the game played at a different level. I disagree, Conner gave them a very good game as well as St. Henry into the third quarter. Holmes did not dominate Cov Cath tonight for the time that I was there (End of 3rd Quarter). They were down by like 10 or so at half, then second half Holmes started pulling away.
Eta Rho
Just got in from the game. Not much to really say when this was pretty much expected. First quarter ended with Holmes leading 16-9 after Maile hit a shot at the buzzer. Covcath actually didn't play too bad. Highlight of the quarter was a 2 hand R. Johnson dunk on a two on one break away. Second quarter Holmes held around a ten point lead all quarter and R. Johnson hit a runner on the baseline at the buzzer to send Holmes in the locker room 27-15 at the half. Third quarter ended with Holmes leading 41-21. Brandon Housely had a one handed dunk on the baseline early in the third and that was really when Holmes started to run away with it. What really hurt Covcath was at the end of the third quarter when they're down 18 and Counts fouled Rico as he attempted a 3 from 25 feet out at the buzzer. Rico made two of three free throws to give them a 20 point lead and that was really when Covcath somewhat layed down. Fourth quarter Covcath got the lead down to 15 but Riley hit a big 3 to push it back to 18 and that was all she wrote. Pittman highlighted the fourth quarter with a dunk over Wellbrock after Wellbrock had blocked his shot. Pittman got the loose ball, went back up strong and threw it down two handed. JJ had a personal 6-0 run which kept momentum from swinging CCH way after Thelen scored several times in a row down low. All in all a solid showing for Holmes. I'd say either Riley or J. Johnson led Holmes in scoring. I don't think Riley missed a shot tonight and made several DEEP 3's. I'd say he finished with around 16. For Covcath, they had a few bright spots in Maschinot and Thelen. Maschinot still has a ways to go handling the ball against pressure and defending but the kid can score. He made several 3's and had a few nice jumpers. Needs to work on his defense though. Riley had his way with him. Thelen played VERY well down low. He was in the right place at the right time a lot tonight. Same boat as Maschinot though. Needs to work on his defense and rebounding. Pittman pretty much had his way with Thelen around the rim. R. Johnson and Luke Maile received the players of the game awards. I don't want to single anyone out, but Maile forced up A LOT of shots tonight that really hurt Covcath. There were several times Thelen, Wellbrock, and Ives were standing wide open under the rim or in the paint and Maile would shoot the ball over two and 3 defenders rather than passing. Riley missed at least 3 three pointers and a runner late that I remember. Maschinot had 1 three and a solid drive. This game wasn't really close though. On a side note, Holmes needs to develop a bench because when they sub(other than Housley) their lead shrinks.

I was surprised at how poorly Covington Catholic played. They didn't seem to be as disciplined as the majority of Coach Listerman's teams. They forced shots, they didn't box out very well, at times effort seemed to be lacking, and overall I was surprised how CovCath just allowed Holmes to completely run over them in the 2nd half. Holmes went up and down the court with ease. Overall, no surprise but a bit of disappointment in how CovCath played in certain aspects.
Dawg81
Holmes 16 11 14 15 56 Cov Cath 9 6 6 16 37 Pittman 9 D Johnson 2 R Johnson 15 J Johnson 14 Riley 8 Housley 6 Slusher 2 JJ had one heck of a game, Rico was solid with a 2 hand dunk in the lane, Riley was 3-3, for some reason they only gave him 2 on a score that was clearly a 3,Housley scored 6 with a monster dunk over a player to b named later , Pittman wasn't getting any good looks, had a soft dunk. all in all very good Game for the Dawgs, one side note,"got a little sloppy now and then or it would have been 30+". PERIOD!!!
the Hulk
When Pittman drove the lane in the first and went up for the throw down on Maile, I knew it was over. Had he made that, I saw the roof coming off the place.

I don't remember Riley missing any shots but you're probably right. Holmes bench didn't have anything to do with their lead shrinking at times tonight. Their sloppy play did. Covcath scored just as much with Holmes starting 5 in. Arnold came in and gave them good mins defensively when Pittman or R. Johnson would go out. He wasn't in uniform.

Sportsfan the only time it was close was 2-0, Holmes totally dominated the game and boards. I can't count how many one shot and done's there was on Cov Cath side. Maile can hop and play, he is the real deal with no help. Also the people who said Pittman would get bullied underneath, DON"T THINK SO!!! :idunno: As far as Conner, St. Henry, they play FOUR quarters-not three. There is a clear favorite team in the ninth at this point and that is Holmes. :dancingpa
kyvince
I agree Maschinot and Thelen had good games. Even though they lost by almost 20, it may have been CovCath's best game since the Louisville tournament. I think it's time for Thelen to take over the starting role. He can score, he rebounds well and he didn't back down from Pittman at all. True Pittman is a much better athlete, and did out jump Jake several times, but Jake battled. Some of the other big's did not, they spent more time laying on their backside. Even though Wellbrock didn't score much, I thought he battled as well. Maile does sometimes force shots, but the offense still revolves around him. If he feels more confident that the big guys down low will finish, I think he will starting getting them ball. I think the lineup should be Maschinot, Ives (played pretty well), Maile, Wellbrock and Thelen. I think Heimbrock, Counse (sp) and Wilson should be the top eight. Robinson gives a big defensive spark as well. That team gives the best combination of offense and defense. I think you gear your season towards the HC game. If you don't beat HC, its Holmes in the district, and it would take a miracle to beat them. I think this team is capable of beating HC and Beechwood, if they play well. If Pauley can come back, I think now you can compete with most teams in the Region on a good shooting night. Unless Mitch Shover returns, and to his last season form, I don't think there is any chance at knocking off Holmes, even if they have an off night. With that said, I think your goal is secure the 3rd seed, win the 1st district game and then hopefully get hot in the regionals. I would rather face Holmes in the Regional final, than the district opener.
