Agree. Nobody comes before the team. Sit the player, explain to them why when you take them out. When a player is pulled from the game for a mistake, let them know why, and treat all of your players consistently.

:thumb: Big fan of Coach Carr at Scott for that very reason. He has a philosophy and a style of play and when he gets the right group of players he can make a serious run. Players in his program get better. I was talking to one of the parents of the current group of seniors and they won 6 games they said as a freshmen team! It would be interesting to see what Carr would do with the pipeline of talent that has come thru Boone the last few years.

 

Could not agree more. Coach Carr does a fantastic job at Scott. Very good coach. He knows what he wants to do and teaches it every day. You know exactly what you are going to get from Coach Carr.

Dealing with fans,parents, etc regardless of a player sitting has to be grueling for coaches. Regardless if you agree or disagree with coaches and their philosophies you have to respect what they have to deal with outside of dealing with the kids on their team.

No player should be treated like a prima donna. As long as the coach communicates to the player why he is being pulled, the player can pass that information on to his parents for their information afterward and adjust to the situation, regardless of whether it is for a "sound" reason. Treating players consistently with each other is important IMO for motivation. One exception may be if the other players are OK with one or more of their teammates having more leeway.

Oh I'm sure that there are some fans unhappy with Willie (isn't that the case with every coach, every where?), but I think it's a very small number. And fortunately, their opinions don't matter beans. The people that count, the Admin, are solidly behind Willie as are a lot of the fans; I know that I am.

 

I think you both may be unclear on my feelings toward Willie. I never once said I didn't like him. I personally like the guy and think he's a great coach, but was simply replying to the comment where someone said that Highlands has a great coaching staff and pointing out that is a topic that gets mixed feelings from some of the folks in the Ft. T community for reasons I rather not get in to, to keep this from turning in to a Covcath/Brossart type thread because Willie doesn't deserve that... and you can ask Qryche, I'm one of the biggest Highlands supporters out there.

 

Well since you chose to open this can of worms, I would ask for you to expound on this subject. This team is 11-3 with all three losses being close and you choose to make this statement. Everyone wants to know why the basketball and baseball programs are the way they are and it is because of garbage like this. The football coach walks on water and no other coach at the school whether it be boys or girls can carry a candle to that. Perhaps he could coach them all. I would suggest that if you and other parents have a problem with the way that Willie runs his program perhaps you should address it with him rather than bring it out in a public forum such as this. If you are lucky, maybe he will leave the program for one that appreciates his talents as a coach.

 

Honestly bro, I don't think people close to the program would want those reasons aired out. I'd be glad to talk with you privately though.

Yes. I do think a coach should listen and be open, take in all of the information, and make the best decisions possible considering all input, but ultimately, as long as that person is in charge, he is god when it comes to the team.

 

I think a coach develops respectability over time through results and what players think about the coach after they leave the school. And it's definitely easier to gain respectability or benefit of doubt from fans and parents with a proven track record or past success.

 

Most people in life are continually evaluated based on various aspects of their job performance by both their superiors and/or customers and have accountability to someone.

 

It is admirable for coaches who sincerely want to help young men succeed in life, but head coaches do also get extra pay for their coaching jobs.

 

I respect that a head coaching job is not easy, and there are always some who are better than others, just as in anything.

I think the Rebels have a nice ballclub and played hard but I will agree that they seemed tentative. The only time I saw them really be aggressive and try to score was when Gabbard did in the 2nd half. I really like McFarland's game. With his height and skills he is a tough matchup. He got frustrated last night and got away from his game though.

I also have coached and had the occasional parent unhappy with "little Johnny's playing time". I would have to believe that most parents/fans would not take the time to get on the internet and complain unless the problem was repeated!

 

Not being close to the team, it seems to me that this is a yearly issue with Boone and, if so, then there IS a problem!

You are a special group... People don't consider the basketball IQ, the unselfish teamwork, the sticky defense, determination, and the coachability of your team and did I mention all Juniors. Most haven't had the pleasure of seeing you perform.

 

Coach Willie has GOT TO BE LOV'IN IT!!! The rest of this season and all of next 2010.

 

I hear they're planning on making a run at Holmes next year being how most have already crowned Holmes 9th Region Champs this season.

 

Here's their body of work so far: record of 12-3; they beat defending state champs Mason Co. on their home court ranked 8th in the state at the time; lost by 3 to a very good Madison Central ask J-Town after leading entirely the whole game; beat 20th ranked Boone Co. (BGP poll).

 

I hope we can keep this thread about the teams whether you're a Boone or a Birds fan.

 

Both teams have some of the best talent around. I'm a little disappointed that some are taking shots at the coaches. I think the Boone kids would agree that they got outplayed in this game and I think the Highlands kids would give alot of credit to the Boone kids for their hustle and effort. It was a very competitive game regardless of the score...

 

The bottom line is that all these kids will be better players from this experience.

This was a very physical game and the officiating was the worst I have seen in a very long time. That doesn't take away the fact that Boone shot around 28%, had too many turnovers and allowed too many second and third chances on the offensive boards. They stood around a lot and did not get after the basketball on loose balls. They are not excecuting fundamental basketball: move the ball up the court quickly, limit turnovers by making good passes and coming to the basketball, follow your shot, block out first, then rebound, get on the floor when there is a loose ball, play in your face defense and pass the ball quickly on offense, there are five really good players on the court at any given time, use them. It was frustrating to watch.

 

Highlands got after it last night. They moved the ball up the court quickly when Boone ran the full court press and passed the ball quickly on offense, creating the open shot. Highlands was the better team last night, and I do believe that on another night Boone could come out on top-they need to work on being more consistent as individuals and as a team.
